Hit a few coastal rivers for some CR cutthroat fishing. I caught my first cutt on a fly rod today. After two fish I went to roll cast the rod and snap. The rod broke at the first connection. It was only the second use and I never abused it. This stinks! I hope to have a new one in hand by next weekend so I can pierce some more slimy jaws. Hopefully on the Deschutes if the money is there.

what kind of rod was it? Make sure you seat those ferruls nice and tight.

Roll casting can be hell on a rod with loose ferrules. I tape all of the ferrules on my spey rods and single hand rods that I plan to roll cast. Provides a little piece of mind and I have yet to break a rod at the ferrule since I started doing this.

Echo solo. I make sure they are tight after every 10 casts or so. I'm so anal about stuff like that and I try to take care of my equipment so it will take care of me.

What kind of tape do you use?

I returned it to the place of purchase. They took care of the shipping for me. I will have the new one by this weekend. I would have taken it to Echo myself but I won't be able to until Friday. Gives me more time on the water.

I just use black electrical tape. Echo is top notch with repairs. I broke a 6wt not to long ago throwing big nasty nymphs in heavy winds, had the rod back in less than a week.

I may have to try that. I'm glad Echo took care of you.

What I do, is wrap the tape from about an inch above the connection to an inch below. Than when I break the rod down Instead of removing the tape completely, I unravel it past the connection point and just wrap it around itself on one of the pieces. I will do this until it loses its tackiness and then replace it. It saves time when you go to put the rod back together since the tape is already attached above each connection point and it saves money by using less tape.
Hope that explanation made sense.
