Looking for a little help, since I can nolonger call the N/R Service department and have maintenace done or questions answered.

Question- I have a Commander with the 5.7 Marine Power and need to change the gas / water separator. I am familiar with motors, but ever since things turned electronic I have turned to service departments. With the loss of N/R Service department I have started doing all the annual service items myself.

Can anyone tell me what brand of filter I need to buy and where possible I could go for this filter. Is it only available at a marine service department or possible the Napa store in town carries them. Is there a filter inside the cartridge that screws in, or is teh whole items replaced like in oil filters.

Since this is my first time changing any advice before doing this. I read in my manual to refill it with gas prior to putting back together.

Headed to Diamond Lake for (3) days and wanted to the last of my service completed.

THanks for the help,

JIm

Hey NR SS ....I've got the filters at NAPA, Carquest etc...they are one piece. Changing them out is a snap. I did not know to fill with gas when swapping them out...I just learned something !! Good Luck at Diamond!!

:yeahthat: Nothing more to add to what swampy said. Except the filters will most likely be chaeper at NAPA or Carquest or Knecht's than at a marine dealership. And its not a good idea to smoke your favorite stogie when your'e doing this kind of work. :D

Oh, and if your'e cheapskate (like me) you can turn your old filter upside down running the gasoline through a cheesecloth. As long as there's nothing strange in the cheesecloth such as rust or metalflakes, you can then put the filter someplace with a lot of ventalation such as your patio or so the bottom is open. Once the gasoline evaporates off (a few days later) store it in your garage, again upside down and exposed to air. Then all the water that may have accumulated will evaporate off and you have your filter for next year.

Check with Siglers (since they are a North River dealer and probably an authorized service center for Marine Power, so hopefully they would stock this item) or with Marine Power, the filter on the motor is specific to only Marine Power motors, if it has the G-Force high pressure fuel pump/water seperator. Anyhow I know some people that have changed it and don't take it apart until you have the replacement cartridge, because it comes with new o-rings, which typically if you take it apart, they don't fit properly again. Also Marine Power has recently updated their website and if you Google MarinePowerUSA you can download a service manual for your motor. Also to make your life easier the part on the fuel filter/water seperator, is on pages 152 and 153.

Thanks Guys! I will pick the boat up tomorrow from storage and come home and take it out.

I will go to Marine Power's website right now and do the download!!

I am pretty excited about the trip to Diamond, as the trout fishing will be okay, but taking my dad who just got over radiation treatment for cancer and his 83 year old friend will be priceless. Last year I drank all there Gold Slauger?? and they took all my money gambling. They laughed and said "see what happens when you drink, you lose all your money!" I said to them, "Yea, but I couldn't have bought the amount of "Their" gold Slauger I just drank for the $20 I just lost".

Thanks Again!!

I just downloaded the Marine Power fuel filter pages and learned it is the G-Force Fuel system.

I think I will wait until I get back from fishing as I doubt NAPA or Car Quest carries this style... I will call in the morning to check!

Thanks again!
