Summer Steelhead Fly Swap 2008

shoulda done this a month ago but what the heck - its a long season here in Oregon... anyone wanna tie some flies?

does a July 15th completion date work with everyone?

Guidelines: (thanks CorkieMonster & steel_beaver)

There will be 12 participants, each participant will tie 12 identical flies, and will receive 11 back (you will not get your own fly back so tie a few extras for yourself. The extra set will go to Jennie)

Participants will be selected on a first come basis. There will be 12 spots including mine which leaves 11 spots up for grabs.

The deadline for flies to be completed and mailed will be July 15th. The official start date will be announced when all spots are full.

Participants who fail to meet the deadline will be barred from future swaps hosted by me. (And their monikers will be posted as slackers for all of Ifish to see ! Seriously lets meet the deadline!)

Once you have become a participant, you are committed to finish the fly swap, so please, make sure you have the time and materials to make your flies.

I will PM all participants my mailing address, if your PM’s are turned off then PM me with your email address so I can give you my mailing address.

All participants must include a self addressed, postage paid envelope with their 12 flies in order to receive their set of flies back. I recommend slightly overestimating the return postage, since other people's flies might be heavier than the ones you tied.

Make sure your return package has the correct mailing address and is legible; I will not be responsible for lost packages.

Each fly must be labeled with the participant's name (moniker) either on a tag on the shank of the hook or written on the bag if bagged.

I would also like everyone to post a picture of their fly in this thread, with the recepie below the picture. Also, let us know if you catch a fish on one of the flies you recieved from this swap.

I would like to add a "NO simple egg pattern" (as in glo bugs, chenile/yarn eggs, etc) and "NO Green Butt Skunk " rules if you don't mind. I know they catch fish and we all know how to tie them, so lets see some of your other favorites.

Count me in. I'll tie the Martha pattern, a turn-of-the-last-century pattern by John Benn, named for his daughter, Martha. I have caught summer steelhead on it. (I'm married to a Martha.)

And why exclude Brad from this tie-off? I know his jokes are bad, but he is otherwise an OK guy, mostly.

I've tied over a dozen flies but still don't have nine of sufficient quality for the swap (although I know they will catch fish).

Maybe by the time I get three dozen tied I'll have nine good ones. Spinning that deer hair is always a challenge.

Well these are in the mail. Now I also tied up a bakers dozen and the nine I sent are the least ugliest of the bunch. That doesn’t mean they are not still ugly. These flies are ment to be fished not admired.

I will post the material list after I figure out what I used to tie it.

Thanks for hosting the swap PCS

Rich - its a #4 sickle hook by Matzuo... alot like a gami octopus hook but with a little meaner look to it :D

i actually haven't really decided if thats the fly you guys will get from me...the river out here is so damn low i can't find any water that's skating real good, and that fly hasn't been staying up enough for my tastes... you guys might end up with one of Silvey's prawns like in my avatar, but orange...

Yes, thanks for running the swap. Sorry mine were late. Looking forward to getting these flies. Mine look goofy, but sometimes it's good to mix things up by throwing something different. In addition to shad, 2 steelhead ate it one day below Bonnie (only 300 steelhead went over that day.) Kokanee like it too.

Received my flies and they are great! We are heading to the Metolius for a few days. I know the reintroduction of salmon and steelhead has not happened there yet, but a couple of those flies look like they might tempt a bull trout at dusk. Can't wait to get them into some real steelhead water.

Wow. I am totally in awe of the craftsmanship, shown here. I will probably never use one of them, but I always have a set handy, should anyone need one! :)
I love these SOoooooooo much!

Bill and I just ooed and awed over them as we ate fresh salmon for dinner!

You guys have SO much talent! I'm just amazed!

Thank you for sharing. They mean SO much to me and I treasure each one of them!

I take them out when I'm feeling blue and go over them and read the names. :) It just makes me happy.

I admire your talent, too, but most of all, it's just neat to have a collection of art from people I admire so much!

I love them. I do! But... wouldn't it be neat to next time collect a collection extra? It could be mine, that's fine! But, I vote that I give my set to the next learning fly fisher in a contest for something?

Wouldn't that be neato, too?
