I'm headed to Klamath lake for a few days, any tips or top secret patterns?

I have the usual Wooley / Seal Buggers, Damsels & leaches. I was thinking maybe some minnow imitations (Zonkers maybe a Spruce?)

Thanks for any tips.

might be a bit early, but if it was me I'd spend my time at the fish banks outside of Rocky point. The reason I'm saying it could be early is that the lake hasn't warmed up much yet and the fish are probably still scattered. When the water temp increases the fish will congregate around the springs. find the springs... find the fish.

just my .0002244475 pesos..

good luck.

One more thing...

stillwater nymphs, black, olive, both with burnt orange hackle are killer apps on Klamath. Keep your retrieves SLOW. clear intermediate lines and up to 5X flurocarbon tippets on 12-14ft leaders are key.

Also.. don't expect to catch large numbers of fish, but when you do hook something it will be pretty good sized.

BTW- What do you do if you hook a 28" Wild Rainbow near the weeds with a 5X TIPPET!!!!??????

I know, I know.....................

We fished that lake around the 4th of July and they were around the springs... like someone already said the fish may be scattered still in the lake. We caught fish outside by fishing the banks and weed patches... the flies mentioned work great especially burnt orange and olive seal buggers. We fished 2x and 3x floro leaders and caught plenty of fish. My biggest fly caught bow came from that lake at nearly 12 pounds - there are some that are much BIGGER! :thisbig:

Go to Rocky Point Resort - they will point you in the right direction. :twocents:

Good luck

Thanks, a 3x or 2X sounds more my style. BTW - We are staying at Rocky Point. I've actually been to Klamath a few time before, it's one of my favorite places on earth. I'm 49, the first time I was at Klamath Lake I was in a crib!

I admit I'm stubborn, my wife would say PIG HEADED. I usually fish various brown leaches/buggers. I WILL fish some burnt orange patterns this year. Also I've never been a big fan of the fish banks, but I WILL give that area a GOOD TRY!!!!

I really appreciate the tips, it helps me open my mind to new approaches.

I usually fish pretty fast, I'll slow down.

I NEVER fish olive, I'll fish olive!

BTW - 5 CENT, I HATE YOU!!!!!!!! (jk)
My biggest is just over 28" (never weighed it) no girth measurement, I guessed 8# ish

I finally put a crowbar in my wallet and bought some flouro tippet.

I'll even BUY some of Denny Rickards burnt orange seal buggers. Don't tell my wife, I must have 200 various buggers:passout:

Again, thanks for everything. I'm praying for a quick warm-up, but if not, I'll head to the fish banks!!!!!!

I'll report back when I get home.

Dude I caught that big one right on the spring in the deep water right off of Rocky Point at 1PM in the afternoon - everyone said you cant catch those fish sitting on the springs during the day but I kept marking them on my fish finder in my boat when we were motoring various places. I decide to get in my float tube and just strip/troll over that spot with a full sink line a few times... second pass :thisbig::D.

I wish I had a digitial picture of that fish but that was before I had a digital camera.

Good luck, I hope you get one thats bigger!

Anything that looks like a leach , sculpin or minnow will work , the fish are usually cruising the edges of the tules . Fish early and late , bring good bug dope . if you haven't fished alot don't use anything less than a 7wt . the fish can be very large 10-15 lbs are not uncommon.
