Justesens Maupin area ponds?

We've built a 3 acre pond south of Fossil and would like to grow trout as big as the Justesens have grown in their private ponds in the Maupin area. Do any of you know how they do it?

1. Particular trout from a particular producer?
2. Special feed on automatic feeders?
3. Weed control?
4. ?

I would start with a internet search on Triploid Rainbows. They have 3 sets of chromosomes instead of 2. It's achieved by raising the water temp (at a certain time and length) in the hatchery. This makes the fish infertile and therefore all they do is swim and eat. Fertile fish "waste" growing time by going through the whole mating hormone dance. Even if they can't successfully spawn and reproduce they will "waste" this time trying. Triploids don't. They get big and live a pretty long life due to the lack of stress and rigors of reproduction.

Assuming you have nice cool springs with Ph trending toward alkaline make sure you get the inverterbrates in the system, many of these ponds have scuds that are great food....the diamond lake fish are growing large fast, they may not have to be triploids....and make sure you don't overstock.

Thanks for all your suggestions and comments. We learned a bit. An outfit in Dayville called Prairie Springs(?) sells Kamloops trout, both normal and Trivoid (don't spawn). They also sell a Steelhead/Lake Trout version that get's larger than the Kamploops.j

We have 100 normal and 100 Tri ordered for delivery next week.

The seller acquires the ODFW transportation permit for the buyer.

Interesting process.

Kamploops trout are 5-6" and cost $0.20/inch plush $1.50/mile delivery charge. Our order cost around $300. We are planting about 1/2 of the maximum recommendation so that we can grow some hogs.
