I am headed over tomorrow to fish with Toot and a couple buddies on the Res. Hope to have some monster redsides to show off upon my return. The "Deschutes Cocktail" should produce!:meme:
I was there yesterday and the bugs are certainly out. Lots of them.
Not sure if anyone else got caught in the wicked microburst about 2 miles downstream from Mecca about 3 pm yesterday, but it was a sight to see. You could literally watch the push of wind full of debris rush up the canyon, snapping trees the whole way. It took me off my feet when it hit me. The wind pushed south for a minute or so, stopped, and pushed back north for another minute, followed by several minutes of heavy rain, hail and thunder. The river muddied up with whole trees floating down river in a manner of 1/2 hour. Haven't heard if it cleared yet. Felt bad for the guys in the boats. They had a long float to TC in latte colored water.
I gave up and went home. Good luck to you.

They raised the water last night but the fishing should be good, Good luck and don't forget the pics
It's a good policy to not let weather forcasts stop you from fishing but I canceled plans for a TH/F trip to mecca. Sounds like for once I made a good decision. I would have to disagree that the fishing will be good with the jump to 5200 cfs on Friday. I hope someone can prove me wrong.
I plan to head over on Monday for a couple of days but will be prepared to move on to other moving water or possibly CO lakes.

Our guide is going to call us around 10PM to let us know if we're on or off. The near tornado/hurricane we had yesterday blew the river as DT said and was confirmed by our guide. Really hope we don't cancel but don't want to shell out cash from crap fishing. Cross you fingers and any other reports you guys have would be great.
Thanks guys

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Best of luck to you if you do go. Hopefully I will be able to make it over to that side of the mountain in a few weeks.

So, did you go or not? What did the guide say about the water color? Thanks.

I did go and the conditions were close to perfect. The water was a little high but perfect color and clarity. The only real issue was the wind and that died down pretty quickly.
The fishing was incredible and got better as the day progressed. I ended up 17 for 24. The biggest fish I had was 20" with the smallest being 15". I had a blast with my strong 4wt!!! The was the custom rod that Meskel built for me. AMAZING.
We fished from well below Chum Bucket to Turkey Flats to White Horse and all the way up to the Mill. Unbelievable water.
I can't tell you why or how, but the fish are smart enough to know that most of us can't fish that side of the river. The piggies hang out over there. One guy in our party landed a 22" and several of us lost bigger fish that just plain handed our butts to us or broke us off.
Great day and if any of you are ever looking to get hooked up with Toot, let me know via PM. There's no comparison between he and Al. He's the best hands down.

Why is it that more people dont just bother to buy the 10 dollar permit to fish that side of the river? Seems like a no brainer to me. Im headed there on Friday from WS to TC.

The section that Nookslayer fished is below the section that you can legally fish with the standard tribal permit which allows you to fish from just below Dry Creek to just below Trout Creek Campground. When you fish with Toot or Al (both Warm Springs tribal members with special permits for guiding) you put in or drive the road on the reservation starting at the Warm Springs river and head down to the top of Whitehorse or so. I've never spoken with someone that fished that section with either Al or Toot that didn't have an epic experience.

I'm working on geting all the photos toether and should have them up soon. Make no mistake though, Two Fister is absolutly correct in the fact you CAN NOT fish the water we did without a tribal member with a special guiding permit. There are only two, Toot and Al. Al will plant you in one spot for almost the whole day ant Toot will run you up and down all the water you can handle. We were well below White Horse and all the way up to the Mill. It's really no comparison in my opinion.
OSU Monkey, be very careful. There are steep fines involved if you fish that water with out a tribal guide. It's well worth the $250 to go.
Chester, you want in for next year? There may even be dates available this year still as well.

The way to book Toot is through Jakob Lund of the Salmonfly Syndicate. You can email him at lund_jakob@yahoo.com

I noticed you mentioned that you fished water that never sees anglers and I had to smile. That side of the river is fished almost as many days as the East side of the river. You won't see any tribal fishermen right now, but later they pound it pretty hard. That time of the year when it is closed for the others. Good pics and good fishing.
