heard slow reports from a friend, they caught 2-4 bass per day around 3-5 lbs two weeks ago on buggers.

Is the road into Gold Lake open yet? If not when do you think it will be accessible?

Anybody trout fish Davis anymore? (remember when Davis was a trout lake?) Not knocking the bass, just curious if anyone's even bothering to strip damsel nymphs at Davis this time of year anymore.

Yes there are still trout there...BIG trout...But there is not very many of them and due to water temps they get stressed easily.
You could fish for them first thing in the spring...but compared to the population, its not really worth it to bug them.

I was bow hunting near the lake last year at the end of september and saw around a gazillion 18"-24 " trout running out of the lake down the out let stream to spawn. there were so many trout in the stream it looked like alaska. We even spoted a black bear in the creek. I think he was fishing??? I think they were big kokes. I definetly want to hit the lake this year.

I don't think Davis is deep enough to support kokes. Sure they weren't whitefish?

No Kokes.......Bows SPAWN in the early SPRING...not FALL! ( only Browns & Brooks do that & Kokes....too shallow for Kokes to survive in this wonderful ONCE CLASSIC TROPHY BOW LAKE...now ruined by BASS) when the ice just comes off..The BOWS want oxygen in cold fresh water to survive when the lake is too hot...hence up into the colder stream! The lake is too shallow!

They are actually kokanee spawning in the fall. I think they come from Odell lake out of Odell creek. Caught them before in all their spawning color glory right in Odell channel.

Now that I think about it, the lava dam is porous and the bull trout are known to swim through it from Wickiup, through Davis and into Odell Creek. I suppose Kokes could do it too. That said, I've seen whitefish stacked in the creek like cordwood in the summer.

Virtually impossible.
That would mean the Bass could have come from Wickiup and every Trout Fisher on Westfly "knows" those Bass were introduced illegally.
I've read it, over and over .....

I saw the fish cause people were fly fishing for them although they would only bite out of anger. They looked like silver salmon w/a deep red streak on them with hooked beaks and they were definatly comming from davis lake swiming toward odell 1000's of fish.

Ok.........
First off knowone know where the water leaches to....it could be wickiup, it could be some underground aquafir etc. Multiple times It has been attempted to confirm where the water goes but it has never been figured out. ODFW in conjunction with the Forest Service put a big effort in seeing if Davis drains into Wickiup a few years back and could never find any evidence that it does, if you ask the bio's they will tell you that they don't know but there money is on a Aquafir.
Second, it is entirely possible that some kokanee migrate from odel lake down odell creek into davis lake. Although i would say that it doesn't make alot of sense to me since Davis lake is way to warm water temp wise for Kokanee. But i won't say it's impossible but its pretty unlikely.
Third there are not any Bull trout in Wickiup. Any bull trout that end up In davis lake migrate down from Odell Lake via Odell creek which they are known to do on occasion.
And although it is impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. The most logical conclusion is that Davis was illegally planted with Bass.

Well I tried to find where I found the idea that bulls migrate through the lava dam into Davis and the only source I found: iFish!:passout: a 2006 thread on Davis (no, it was not me). From all the other sources I found, leadeyedbugger is 100% right.

Goes to show you can't believe what you read on the internet!:D

BTW, I was at Davis this weekend. Fishing was slow for trout and bass. Wind didn't help. The lake was not as full as I'd hoped.
