NORTHWEST ANGLING EXPERIENCE
2009 SEASON
Here we are almost mid year and this is what's in store for N.W. Oregon anglers.
Estuary Sturgeon : June 1- 22. One of the seasons most exciting fisheries, Astoria sturgeon will test your stamina as an angler. Pound for pound, sturgeon are the hardest fighting freshwater fish available to us here in Oregon. Double digit days are the norm with "oversize" fish to 8 ft. long . Shallow water fishing with light tackle is the routine, so the sturgeon's aerial acrobatics will bring lots of "Wows", "Ooohs and "Aaahs". Also one of the best tasting fish available, the sturgeon's mild, white flakey meat is delicious to the palate any way you cook it. The month of June brings nice weather to the Coast and balmy days are very common, but bring the raingear just in case. This fishery is also great for introducing kids to fishing as there is allot of action to keep the attention level in the red zone. I have a handful of days available so book now to get your date.
Ocean Salmon : July 15-31 With all the 1.2 million Coho returning to the Columbia river alone this fall, the ocean out of Astoria will be filthy with hungry fish. We have to pick our days but the last half of July offers some good tides for crossing the bar. This is fast and furious fishing and early limits are the rule.
Astoria/Buoy Ten Salmon : Aug-Sept 15. This is the year of the Coho salmon, with 1.2 million estimated to show up at the mouth of the Columbia this coming August.... and we cant ignore the 500,000 Chinook salmon that will surely bend a bunch of rods. This is Oregon's premier salmon fishery and anglers come from far and wide to experience the mighty Columbia's fall salmon bonanza. August 10-31 will be prime for Chinook with a a bunch of Coho mixed in to keep your leg's quivering. The limit goes to three Coho per person starting September one and the first week should be gangbusters. This fishery books fast so get with it and get your date now.
Tillamook Chinook and Coho : Sept 15- Nov. My favorite fishery of the season, Tillamook rarely disappoints. Know for its big fall Chinook and the Coho aren't anything to shake a stick at either. Last season we put a handful of 40+# hawgs to the boat and a wild Coho that Im betting was 24 lbs. Not a big numbers fishery like Astoria, but the size and quality of the fish more than make up for it. We are expecting a large return of hatchery Coho this season that will be a nice addition to the daily bag limit.
North Coast river drift trips : Nov- Dec. Always a favorite, the river Salmon trips are a nice change of pace from the power boat, troll fishery. Nothing beats the backbounced egg bite, or the smashing take on a Kwikfish lure. The surge of a heavy Wilson river Chinook in the fast water will make your arms burn and your heart pump like a jackhammer.
Time's not standing still so don't hesitate and call or email now for the best dates.
Thank you and looking forward to fishing with you this season.
