Can someone educate me on exactly how hook size is determined and does it vary with brand? What is the largest hook size for stocker trout that you would use? I have seen some Kokanie "Double Whammy" lures with a trailer hook and they look really effective for trout but the hook size seems a bit large. What do you think?

6 would be the biggest for Rainbows, I like 8's mainly all I use..

Hook Sizes

The numbers that define hook sizes can be confusing, but the system is really very simple. Hook sizes are based on a nominal hook size of zero. Hook sizes with a number followed by a zero increase in size as the number goes up.
For instance a 4/0, ("four bar oh" or "four oh"), hook is one size up from a 3/0, which is one size up from a 2/0, etc.
Hook sizes not followed by a zero, decrease in size as the number increases.
For example a size 3 hook is smaller than a size 2 hook, which is smaller than a size 1 hook.
While nearly all hook manufacturers follow this basic numbering system to indicate the increase or decrease in size of each hook within an individual pattern, there is unfortunately little standardisation in overall sizes. For instance what may be a size 4/0 in a Mustad hook may not necessarily be the same as a 4/0 in an Eagle Claw hook.

I sometimes go as big as a size 4 for Kokanee and trout, but usually a size 6.

for truck trout in lowland lakes id say a # 8 baitholder is fine, but if you like to fish rivers, creeks, alpine lakes or any water that is really clear and the fish a little smarter id suggest using smaller like 10's and 12's. ive caught some exceptional fish free drifting a single egg on a # 12 gold egg hook!

I caught a 7# summer steelhead on the McKenzie a few years ago on a size 12 gold egg hook and 4# test.
Native, silver dollar.
I still have the hook!

I'm using 2's exclusively. Keeps the little ones off my line usually.
