I have a trip booked to Diamond Lake in mid June. I have fished every other lake in Oregon but have never fished Diamond. I am pretty excited about it!:meme: I assume the fly fishing will be off the chain. I'm taking the family along with me so I will be doing some gear fishing too. Does anyone have some tips they can share? Is anyone else out there at this time?

I have to recommend a bug suit like the other guy. My buddy took his family to the Diamond/Lemolo area last year for a 4 day weekend. He made camp, fished for a couple hours, returned to camp, and packed his stuff and left. His family was attacked by mosquitos...great fishn though. Worms, F-4 to F-6 frog patterns, Woolly buggers, Power Bait, and ?? Just hope you can outlast the bugs, you"ll catch plenty.:twocents:
Are you camping or staying in the hotel/cabins? On the lake I haven't found the bugs too bad, but they are around for sure- mostly midges. In June there should be some other bugs coming off, too.
It is possible to gear and fly fish at Diamond but even with a bigger boat it can be tough. As far as the fishing goes, you should be in prime time. I'll be there late June and am excited.
Trolling flies worked well for us. I can give you more info as your trip gets closer and I hear from guys that have gone. Very cool place for families all summer long and the fishing after they nuked it has been great.

I will be there the 13 - 17 of june, never fly fished there. Last year at this time fishing was great with both powerbait and trolling

Thats the time I'm going to be there too... 13th - 19th. We are staying in a cabin so hopefully the bugs wont be an issue like camping - I know that a huge midge hatch can be a bit overwhelming! Sounds like I am going to have a blast - there should be some real big ones this year! :thisbig::applause:
Hopefully my barge can troll ok up there - I have done OK on other lakes with it. I know its a big boat but its the only one I have!
If all else fails I will take my float tube off my boat! :)

How big is your boat? I am heaqding up there about the same time with a 16 ft DB; not too big at all. I'm gonna try everything but trolling.:)

I'll be there June 13-20, camping, hope the bugs aren't too bad. I was there last summer in mid-Aug and no bug problems.
We trolled needlefish and caught fish whenever the lines were in the water.
Can't wait.:excited:

Is there a little store at the lodge? They sell tackle and flies there too? I am assuming so but better be safe than sorry!

We will be there early June, just like last year. Last year the biggest fish were taken at the south end of the lake in shallow water. We used dark wet flies cast toward the weeds, and small kastmasters. It's too shallow for trolling there. Most of our fish were 15 - 17 inches, but we took several up to 21 inches. The trollers last year were taking some large fish, but a lot of 12 - 14 inchers. Powerbait fishermen also take a lot of large fish at the south end. Weather was terrible last year for us -- windy and snowing most of the time, so we didn't have the usual mosquito problem. Out on the lake away from shore it is OK, but in camp in the evening it sounds like a helicopter warming up, there is such a mosquito buzz in the trees!

We were there the last week of June last year & the bugs were horrible. There were hatches of Mayflies & Midge. We were covered with bugs the entire time of fishing. And then there were the hungry mosquitos at camp. Hopefully mid June won't have that problem. :)
5-Cents: Yes they do have some fishing supplies at the marina & there is a store with food, clothing, etc.

For those of you fishing up there soon - I was told by the lady at the resort that there was a huge crack in the ice all the way accross the lake and that some of the water was open now. :applause:

i usually fish diamond lake end of may but have been there a few times during the summer worst bug outbreak i had been in there was memorial day weekend one year it was terrible. As far as how you plan to fish it as the water warms up i have found that you will need to bottom fish more as trolling kind of slows down then because as the water warms up the fish tend to go deeper, just my two cents i have fished it alot of years and end of may knocked them dead trolling flatfish and been there in july and didnt catch anything trolling. good luck and have fun its a beautiful lake to fish.

I fished Diamond last year right after the thaw and did well on the south end of the lake in the shallows casting spoons and retrieving. Went back in June and the fish had moved to the North end of the lake into the cooler, deeper water. Tried the spoons again and nothing. Went to trolling and hammered them. The bugs were TERRIBLE. Swarms of mosquitos everywhere. The fish were super fat though. It was worth putting up with the bugs. They have been literaly ice fishing the lake and doing well since the opener. Slowly melting........heard there was still 12" of ice on the lake now. Should be a good year, those fish from last year will be super fat and hungry.....best of luck to those of you who get to go.

The ice is mostly melted. They say it will be 75% off by tomorrow. The pictures on the site looking out across the lake from the lodge show very little ice and they were taken this morning. I might go tomorrow and will report if I do. I guess people did well yesterday.

I just got back from Diamond Lake... got down there about 3:00pm on Saturday fished off the shore north of the lodge area for about 3 hours and got 1 fish... went and ate dinner then went back and got 3 more fish in about 20 minutes just before sundown.
Got up about 6:30am Sunday went back to the same location and limited, cleaned the fish and finished a shower by 9:30 am. :) lol
No monsters but all a very nice 14-16in range. I was using the gulp rainbow and marshmallow cluster powerbaits, dipped in the Corn scented yellow goo.
Overall, 9 fish in less than 6 hours or so of fishing total.. I'd call it a good trip. :)

Shane,
We were up there last year around that time(Fathers' Day Wknd) and the bugs weren't too bad(have seen them alot worse). Fishin' was great, we fished the SE end in the weed beds with bobbers/worms. A few fish caught on Power Bait, but not like the garden hackle. Didn't need/want to troll, catching was steady.
We will be up there again this year from June 18-21.
Have fun.

I was thinking bobbers too - a slip bobber with the worm suspended about 3 inches over the weeds should be DEADLY! :twocents:

I am planning to give Diamond Lake a try on a Day trip over Memorial weekend, and would like to put in at the South boat ramp. Does anyone know what is required for that ramp? Forest pass? Or a launch fee? And can I get it at the ramp in the morning? I have fished the lake before but have always been camping and used the park ramp so didn't need to worry about that.

Check with the lodge. I was there this weekend and the road to the South side of the lake was still closed.

You got it!!! We fished 5' leaders(fixed) under chartreuse Adjust-a-Bubbles(can you say Crane Prairie specials:D) in anywhere from 7-12' of water. The deepest fished our baits was 6'.

Access to the South boat ramp is still closed by snow. As for the fee, you (would have) needed a FS pass and yes there is a way to get one at the ramp. The lake is ice-free, fishing is great, boat launching access and nearby parking will be very limited this weekend. Nobody will go there for the holiday weekend though because it will be too crowded:whistle:

It was pretty dam good, we hung with all the boats ( lots of boats) on the south end in the early morning and saw a slow bite for the anchored, we were in l8 to 20 ft. of water and it was weeded. I noticed the Lake's guide service was over here too, in 12 ft. of water and was hooking up so often but I could'nt stay with this fleet for more than an hour, we had 4 persons so 4 lines down and only had 2 bites that did not stick. We went all the way over to north end in 28 ft of water no weeds and ended up with 4 limits in a couple of hours, doubles, stayed in one spot, most fish 12 to 14, two over 18, marinated powerbait seemed to be our ticket. Best of all we had no boats around us....

Diamond Lake the jewel of Oregon.......hence the name.....one of the best lakes ever and now since the shubs were killed....shallow lake...lot's of feed for the trout now ( insects galore) to get big quick in 20' of water or so.....I like the south end........listen to the wind....... and drift with the force of the direction of the wind..... with no power until you get close to the other shore...motor back again to the lee side and drift again with no power....repeat over, and over.....again...and again....a floater or a intermediate line stripped out completely with a pattern...a sexy leech works good...doesn't matter really.....twitch and tease a bit..... and then hand on! Have fun my friend!

4 of us fished Friday and Saturday, 40 fish in the cooler and realased 8-10 fish that weren't gutted. About 20 were the cookie cutter 13-14 inch variety but the other half were in the 15-19 area. Fished across from the boat ramp at Thielsen in about 20ft of water, green/captian america/yellow/rainbow and even Gulp eggs caught fish. We found our "hammer" hole on the south end of the lake in 22ft of water, between some weed beds. Top two flavors were Chunky Chart (Gulp) and plain ol Chartruse, Rainbow and Spring Green also produced too. My rod was running Chunky Chart w/ a 22 inch leader and was the top producer of the day. Second best had a 48 inch leader and was using Chartruse PB.
We moved around a lot looking for fish, basically treated it like sturegon fishing. If we didn't get bit in 30 minutes or so we picked up and moved, maybe only 20 yards or so until we found a spot that produced.

Heading up to Diamond tomorrow morning, returning on Monday. Looks like unsettled weather will persist. Fished there last year just after the 4th of July amid all the bugs. Just had to get up early, get the fish and get off the lake by 10 or 11. That always didn't work because that's about when the wives wanted to fish and then had to listen to the complaints about all the bugs. Couldn't get them up at daybreak when the bugs weren't up yet. Will post when I get back.
Verizon is a yes. I've talked to guys fishing up there many times from home, Verizon to Verizon.
Please post a report. Going up next week. Curious how the unsettled weather has affected fishing. Lake is due to turn over, too.

All this talk about nice big rainbows has gotten me excited. We are packing the boat and heading from Sweet Home to Diamond Saturday morning. Have never fished the lake before but plan on some hearty trout and lots of bugs!
Our family and my brother's family are heading for Diamond next Thursday. Been watching the NWS forecasts pretty closely lately. Got the marshmallow and hot dog sticks, trout-cooking grill, and a good assortment of tackle to try. Love those views of Thielsen and Mt. Bailey from the lake!
