I have two grand kids and would like to introduce them to trout fishing. I mostly salmon fish and am completely out of touch with where to go with 2year olds. I do have a boat and am considering doing some trolling up at Hagg Lake. I'd rather not take them to Horning's hideout but I suppose at their age it may be the best spot.

Any suggestions around the Portland area would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The link below gives you ODFW's weekly stocking schedule. If you hit a lake by the weekend after the stocking, you should do well. Note that the date is for the week of the stocking. They won't tell you the day, though if you call the regional office in Clackamas, they will confirm whether a given lake's been stocked already. Good luck! (bring lots of snacks and don't keep them out there too long)

Toddlers have a great time everyday at the Canby pond. There is also a playground nearby. The park is safe, clean, and kids always catch fish(at least when I am there)

canby pond is by far one of the best for young kids. im not kidding when i say this, last month a friend and i fishied all day and between us we caught about 50 trout, a bluegill, 2 ********* and 3 catfish! caught and released all day.

Never been to Hornings, but I gone to similar places in Sandy and Estacada, personally its not my bag.
But given the attention span of a toddler, and the guaranteed result of catching a fish and remembering the experience, it cannot be beat.
Thats my :twocents:

Thanks guys for the tips. Canby pond sounds like a good bet.

I'll check the stocking schedule. Thanks, that's a big help!

Another option is Commonwealth lake in Beaverton, if you're in Hillsboro, it might be a bit closer drive for you. It's near Murray and Walker Road I believe. They stocked it not too long ago, and it's a really nice park!

That's where I plan on taking my 2 year old when I get a free weekend...

Hornings is a cool place. I have taken my now 3 years old son twice. I think it cost me $20 for 5-6 fish. No release so the catching is pretty quick. Peacocks are scary but, cool to look at.

Canby pond is great too. Better play ground area, closer to the city. A lot more people.

Try going out past Estacada to Promitory Park. They have a small pond there called Small Fry Lake. It is Stocked and only Kids can fish in there. Its a way for little kids to fish and be safely off the Big Water. My dad took me and my brother there when we were 2 to 10. Then we could fish the bigger waters.

I took my 3 year old to Bethany pond (185th and Walker) a few weeks back when they stocked it. She caught 2 on her little purple rod before getting bored

Trojan pond out by Rainier. That is where I take my 2 almost 3 year old. Easy to get to tons of space and there are fish in there.
