drove down to crow butte for some CR action sunday morning before mothers day activities. Fished from 6:30-10:am and picked up about 20-25 smallies. Biggest measured was 14 inches even.

Temp was 52-56 in the crow butte bay where I did all my catching. Yo-zuri fire tiger lip-less crank is my new favorite bait. Green tube baits hopped near rip rap did some damage. I threw a 4 inch T-rigged lizzard for about an hour that I have alot of confidence with, and NADA....then I'd switch back to the tube, or to the lipless again, and BAM. I wish I could figure out how to catch some bigger fish.

Do the big fish usually stay out in the Big C, and the smaller fish head into the warmer bays?

I have not fished that area, but perhaps the males have moved up to make beds and the females have not yet? Maybe fish some points or other likely staging areas near deep water but still close to where you found the small males.... the big sows could still be waiting to come up?

If they are still stagging, they will be eating.

Just my :twocents: Good luck.

My brother and I fished crow butte on the 9th and Th also. We caught about he same amount of fish each day 20-25 all bigger fish up to 19 inches. All the fish were caught on two different baits. I threw a lip less rattling bait and my brother casted a sinking crank bait. The lip less bait I threw was the lure for the big and most fish (3 to 1). By the time the two days were over all the paint was worn off and it was plastic white and still catching fish. Our temp said the water was 57 degrees. Sure was nice not having the wind blowing.

Just my :twocents: Good luck. This was the case for us on Friday. Points on the corners of bays produced in about 8-15'. All females. A couple of really nice ones too.
