Didn't get on the water until after 10. The sheriff's boat was busy at the Gull Pt launch and had quite a few customers. I got the boat inspection and my sticker. This threw me off my normal pattern and I tried launching the boat after the inspection without taking off the tie downs on the boat. Oops. Then while waiting for the father-in-law to get back from parking the truck my daughter informed me in a very shrill scream that we had forgotten her Barbie fishing rod. I tried to let her know that I had plenty of rods and we would be OK. That didn't help as the tears continued to flow. I pulled up near the launch and yelled to my father-in-law to grab the Barbie rod from the truck. Got several smiles and laughs from the people at the launch. Well after that was quickly solved we were off to fishing.
I threw the tackle box at them. Very slow for us. It was my first time fishing Wickiup so not sure what to look for or where to go. Started in what I think was the Davis arm near quite a few other boats. Picked up one there on a spinner. Very nice fish and thick. Then tried to run down towards the dam. Cruising along in 40' of water and all of the sudden in 5'. Yikes then we see grass sticking up above the water. Well we got redirected and finally found some deeper water. Managed only one more on a minisquid towards the dam. Again a very fat football fish.
Beautiful day and what seemed like quite a few boats. I never saw anyone else fighting a fish and talked to a few people at the takeout and they had 1 or 2 fish. Definitely going to go back just need a good map of the lake so I don't end up on a beach or something.
Hope others out there had a good time. Hit the store at South Twin on the way out for ice cream. That was my 4 year old daughters favorite part.
