I'm planning to take my son out and try and hook him up with something that puts up a fight. He's caught Perch, Trout, and bullheads, but nothing that has ripped off line. So I thought that I'd take some corn and maybe some bread/doughball out to Smith and Bybee lakes in north Portland and see what happens. So I was wondering if the Carp are active now?
Any information or comments would be appreciated.

I don't claim to be an expert, but 2 of the best fighting fish I've ever caught (and I've caught just about all the freshwater fish OR has) are smallmouths and shad. The smallies are available in the Columbia now, as well as the Willamette, and the shad run is comning soon. Don't horse 'em!

Don't want to hijack the thread but what's a good technique for Carp fishing ... my grandson is coming first of June for a week and thought we would spend the day on the Willamette working on a Grand Slam (assuming salmon/steelhead will be closed) - Shad - Sturgeon - Bass/Crappie - Carp
I am set for shad and sturgeon, have had a little luck near Cedar Oaks for crappie but though I've seen Carp in the water, I've never fished for them ... is it bobber fishing with worms, cheese-balls, Powerbait ???
Any links to other threads ?

This is how I've caught carp. I thread a piece of pencil lead, or a little sinker with a hole so the lead will slide. Then I tie on a swivel thats big enough to keep the lead from sliding down onto the 18" leader that is tied onto the other end of the swivel. I use about three kernles of canned corn on about a #6 or 8 bait hook.
Carp maybe trash fish they can be picky. if they feel the weight they may drop the bait. Thats why you want the main line to slide through the sinker. Put your rod in a forked stick with a little slack in the line. Enjoy a beverage/snack and keep an eye on the slack line. When you see that line start to straighten out pick up the rod and fights on.
I believe it's unlawful to chum so don't throw a handful of corn out where you're fishing.

i saw carp all over jumpin today, on the columbia, in small lakes off of 14... we even hooked one on accident in the columbia on a 4-6 crank, would have been a big ole fish too, if i wasnt a goof with the net!!!
