View Full Version : A vs D thread, why the different sizes???

So I have just finished wrapping my first heavy rod (I'll post some pics once the epoxy is done). Anyhow, prior to this rod I had done nothing but spinning and float rods in the 10-15lb line class. When I did my first one I used A thread...why...because thats what the shop sold me! I don't think I even knew I had a choice?!?! Once I had bought some different color A's thats just what I stuck with until I did this heavy rod.

So on this heavy rod I decided to have an under wrap in A (with light build epoxy) and then D over top. I found that D sized thread was easier and quicker to work with. Is it just me? Seemed not to cross over as much when wrapping, the wider diameter must cover more space with fewer wraps, and it seems to walk up the foot more easily...all in all I was really happy with how the D thread rolled!

So why the different sizes? Are there some down sides I havent found (like does expoxy not penetrate D as easily)? I cant see any reason why D wouldnt be good for all those lighter rods I did and unless I can find a reason, I think I will more towards D thread in the future?

Oh, one more question, I have noticed that some decently packed A wraps (once epoxied) let a metailic glint from the foot thru the wraps. Would a D sized thread block out that glint? (another plus for D if thats the case)...

Any feedback?

Thanks

The glint is from a combination of not burnishing or packing enough plain and simple. Epoxy will show you the errors of your ways.

Why A and D? Well there is A, B, C, D, and E - larger threads have higher breaking strength. A IMO is plenty strong for any heavy rod @ 2# or more - 50 or so wraps is you guessed it a lot more than 2#. If you triple wrap and do not use finish between each layer you will want to increase in size from layer to layer so it doesn't bite into the lower layer, or decrease tension as you come out.

I mostlty use A, but did use D on Pilar's last rod and also on Puffin's rod that I'm doing right now.

Oh don't forget Maderia comes in its own size and so does Sulkey. Were all thread junkies. Not sure about threadart  Fishhawk and Pacbay are supposed to be the same size as gudebrod I think

I agree, D thread is much easier to work with and I use it on all my rods. I triple-wrap most rods, using D for everything, including the underwrap. I don't use finish between the layers.

Heavy rod, heavy thread
Light rod, light thread
