I thought the Oregon largemouth record came from Ballanger Pond

The old record was from Selmac but has been broken at least twice since then. Lost Creek on the Rogue and then Ballanger I think.

The current one did. Pretty sure at least two of the previous records were from there back in the early to mid 80's.

Yep, Selmac has produced the state record twice. We have seen some beasts in the lake before, just haven't hooked up with a real big one yet. Maybe this will be the year. Will report when we get back.

:yeahthat:
I grew up over there, my grandpa owns the ranch on the back side of the lake. I've seen some absolute hogs in there that (at the time) would have shattered the current record. My brother has landed 2 fish over 9 lbs from there. Unfortunately, Jo Co. parks dept have removed a great deal of the willows that once surrounded the lake which wiped out a lot of the shade and cover.

Thinking about hitting up Selmac at the end of this month. I am fairly new to bass fishing so any advice will be helpful. Do you have a better of chance catching bigger fish but fewer in the next few weeks or is that later in the year? I know there are times where the fishing is better for the smaller bass and you will catch more but can't remember which comes first, the bigger bass or the smaller? Any info on this will help. Has anyone caught anything at Selmac lately?
Thanks.

To catch some bigguns, I would recommend, large worms, cranks, and swimbaits.

Well we had a great time but the bass fishing wasn't red hot. We caught several bass but couldn't put a good patteren together. We would catch one up shallow on a jig then go two hours with nada. Then switch tactics and catch two out in open water on a crank then go three hours with nada then go catch some crappie to boost our egos. It was like that all weekend. We saw several large bass cruising or suspended on wood but they would spook real easy and we just never could get a consitant bite going. Biggest fish caught were around two pounds and were few and far between. The crappie and blue gill fishing was excellent and we ended up having a nice fish fry one evening. Couldn't quite figure out where the bass were in the spawn. What we saw and were told by some locals pointed to post spawn but we saw no evidence of recent beds and no bass fry anywhere. The fish we did catch had no signs of spawning activity. Water temp was in the mid sixties. Anyways had a great trip, I just think we timed it on the wrong weekend. I will try and get a couple pics up in the next couple of day.

I thought I'd bring back an older thread instead of creating a new one....
I'll be going to Lake Selmac in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone's got any secrets - that you're willing to reveal - on fly fishing for trout there.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

My buddy Butch Stauffacher had that old state record from Selmac (sometimes referred to as "smellymac"" by the locals here). He's got the mount on the wall at his place. If you ever want to talk with him about it, he tends bar at the Blur.

ahhh....if I talk to him at the Blur about it, I'll start drinking, then I'll never leave and therefore never get to fish....what an evil circle. :)

Outboards are alllowed 10 MPH speed limit.
Only fished selmac in the spring for bass and panfish, sorry I can't help out with your trout plans. Good luck and let us know how it is down there.
