Well I've been playing with a few ways to do a halibut rod. The request was make the wraps look like a halibut :passout:
The white bottom and black were easy - but how to do dark brown and black blotchey
First attempt was using Gudebrod Classic in Orange and Black. With finish on it the Orange goes very dark brown even when wrapped over white thread - it was almost perfect, but the pattern was too tight and the thread was only available in size A.
Back to the memory banks and the drawing board - then I remembered seeing a Clemens wrap and decided to give that a try.
basically you take your thread and you lark on it with a Sharpie. In this case I wrote the moniker of the person who ordered the rod on the thread while it was still on the spool and added some other marks just cause. This is Size D Dark Brown

Then spun up one of the guide feet to see what I had. Took this before I packed the thread - the leaking white disappeared.

I think that makes for a good dark brown and black blotchy pattern. White underwrap aka belly and some trim bands to break up the white field.
the White to the left of the guide is the beginning of the tiger which will use medium brown nylon that should get a little darker as it is influenced by the black in the base layer - more later
