Got a Merc 15HP 2 Stroke. Manual Start, 2001
It's idling and starting up Okay. But, when I go into gear, she dies. Any ideas? I've fogged the motor pretty well.
Pulled the plugs, looks like there is some oil on the them. I'm guessing that is not good? I'm going to change them out.
Any advice on what the cause is, or what I need to do to fix the problem?
Thanks,
Bob

Approximately how many hours? Is the motor fully warm? Is the thermostadt stying closed until its fully warm?
I have a 2002 Bigfoot (4 stroke) with about 2500hrs that I'm waiting on a crab kit. When it gets here the carb is gonna be like new. This is the first trouble I've had. I'm guessing this is your problem too.
A little oil on the plugs in a 2 stroke is not a bad thing. May want to check the ignition timing.
Good luck!
i vote for carb. It's a real sinple one. But it could be a small
air leak. Oil on plugs is not a bd thing for 2 stroke, well a little
oil. If she dies when you acelerate it coul be a stuck float or
an air leak. Cleal carbs and a full bulb!

The Motor has abut 200 hours on it.
I can only throttle it without it dying if the primer/choke is all the way out. If it is the carb. Easy to do myself? Prolly should get a manual? I'm not very good with mechanical engined inclined(if that is a word). I can definately see the carb and know what it is.

It has a drain, on the forward bottom. Use a wrench to lossen it and
spray carb cleaner in the tob and in the line. Tighten it back up
spray more carb cleaner in the sediment bowl, pump it a few
times and try to run it.

Needing to have the choke out to accelerate is a dead giveaway that it's lean. That either means you have an air leak or some kind of obstruction in the carb's fuel passages (clogged jet or something along those lines.)
Take the carb apart and clean everything out (jets, bowl, etc) and make sure the gaskets and boots are in good shape. My guess is that will take care of it.
If you spray wd40 or carb cleaner between the carburetor and the engine, and the rpm changes, you have an air leak.
