View Full Version : Throwing Grease

I recently put new wheels on my boat trailor and noticed that there is grease all over both of them on the backside. My neighbor pulled one off and took the bearings out. He said that the spindles were pitted and it wouldn't do any good to put new seals on. Any suggestions on how to fix this or where to get replacement spindles or a new axle?

Check into a speedy sleave, it gives your new seal a new surface on your old spindel.

Depending on how pitted they are, you will probably be able to get away with using some crocus cloth to smooth or polish the spindle enough to where it wouldn't tear up the seals. I even use this stuff on a brand new spindle. Be very patient. Keep "polishing" until you get a very smooth surface. You can get this stuff at NAPA.

When you put the hub to the spindle, don't forget to put a light coating of marine axel grease on the surface you just polished. This gives the seals all the lubrication they need to prevent them from cutting grooves into the spindle. This technique even works on the front of an engine crankshaft where seals are installed in the timing cover. :meme:

Speedy Sleeve as twisted lines suggested also works too.

Good luck.

I agree with you, this is the first and easiest option. A mechanic friend and fellow fisherman helped me with the same problem. Never had another grease leak.

yes that should do the trick.
