My dad has a two-stroke engine on his boat and we don't like that we have to mix the fuel. He herd about an oil mixer that automatically mixes the oil into the gas before it goes into the engine. Dose anyone know about these and what would be a good brand? thanks for any help and advise you can give.

I've never heard of an after-market oil injection system, which is what I think you are talking about. Anyone else?
Perhaps you could try google?

Not aware of any aftermarket one's. I took mine out of
my old merc, didn't trust it. That was over 10 years ago.

Had one on the old intruder. Worked for a few yrs. then started acting up & mixing rich. Sold with the boat. Haven't seen them for sale for a few yrs. now. Heard they had mixing probs and quit selling them. You could call Stevens, I believe that was where wifey bought it for me.

Merc used to have the Acumix that mixed the gas & oil as you go. The old OMC company also had a similar thing. They're great when they work but not worth anything when they don't. I've had both and mixing the gas ain't so bad. Thec cost a lot.:twocents:

Get one of those calibrated quart bottles at the outboard dealer. It shows how much oil you need for any amount of gallons. It's idiot proof - just put oil in the bottle to the appropriate gallon line, and then dump it in the tank. Simple.

the OMC model was called accumixer R for remote. I had one for my 25 HP 2-stroke kicker. I worked great for the 3 years of so I had it. to make it work right I did have to upgrade to a different fuel pump diaphram..it works by "mimicing" the fuel pump ulse with an injection hole in a diphram in the mixer (i hope this makes sense) I do not think these have been made for years....
i did find this on the web:
ACCUMIX R
Remote oil injection kit for auxilary installations.
1986 and newer 5 thru 50 HP.
Availability can be spotty on this item - -
SOME MODELS WILL REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL
ENGINE-MOUNTED FUEL PUMP TO USE THIS KIT:

I have an automatic one on my 96 merc I let it run down so that the alarm goes off, I like to make sure it is working.
If it ever goes bad I will take it out and just mix, I have not had any problems but do not trust it 100%

Chances are that the only way your going to know it wen't bad is when you hear pistons, rods, and the crank all traveling at different speeds. Ask me how I know...
For those that pre-mix. I just usually drop about 1/2 the oil for what I think its going to need into the boat then fill the boat up with gas and drop the rest of the oil it needs into the tank, followed by a glug of gas to wash it down (ie if the gas gage reads 1/2 full, I will drop 1/4 gallon of oil, put in 25 gallons of gas, then another 1/4 gallon of oil and a splash of gas to wash it down). Is this what others are doing?
Thanks,
Chris

its an older 200 hp merc. and the onboard gas tank is about 50 gal. its hard to do the mxing without over filling it at the station. Thanks for all the imput, sounds like it's not as good of an idea as we originally thought.
Does anyone like them?

That's about what I do. I can hear the tank filling to the top, stop and add the rest, and add a gallon or two more.

Unless you like buying motors, I would not buy or own one. I bought a used boat with an 8hp 2-stroke Merc on it. The main is a 175 Sportjet. The main is oil injected so in lieu of a separate tank for mixing, the OMC "mixer" was installed(prior to me owning it). Shorly after I got it, the kicker wouldn't start. I eventually found that the fuel feed hose was completely filled with 2-stroke oil. I took it to the local mech and he said lose the mixer or lose your motor. The mixer fails internally by either under or over oiling the supply to the motor. Fortunately mine failed the "good" way. I think the other is sef-explanatory. I switched to a separate tank with mixed gas for the kicker until I got tired of that and bought a 4-stroke.

My boat has one of the old OMC mixers and it works great. The guy I bought the boat from used it for many years, and its worked for me for several years.
I guess it must be hit or miss, and I got lucky. I'm running a 15 Hp Johnson on it. Maybe they work better for certain engines.

You're just rolling the dice every time you use it. It may never fail, it may fail tomorrow. Mine did and so did hundreds of others at different times. It wasn't a risk I was willing to take in exchange for simply not having to mix the fuel.
I wish you continued good luck and hopefully yours doesn't go bad :flowered:

I have been using a mercury autoblend unit with my 8hp merc 2 stroke. To date, I have not had any problems. When someday the auto oiler does finally take a dump, I will have the excuse to buy a 4 stroke kicker! :D

My comments are in regards to the OMC brand mixer. I don't know anything about the others. Sounds like it's working good for ya :D

Had one and it failed and shortly after, so did my outboard. No warning that it was not adding oil to the fuel. The knocking was the give away!!
Gave me an excuse to get a new 4 stroke.

One of the reasons they fail is the male hose bib plug on the unit, where the hose connects, gets cracked durring installation. Or stainless hose clamps crush the bibs. Use 2 stroke oil on the hose bib to install. Remove hoses very slow. If you must remove the unit to fill (Or better yet...to throw away!) dont tilt twards the hoses. That will again crack the hose bibs. All of the above will cause the unit to suck air causing engine falure.
That is why OMC really stands for...OH MY CHECK BOOK!
