I think it would be useful to have GPS access via my Matrix series sonar unit. My two options are to connect my eTrex Legend to it or buy a Humminbird GPS sensor.

Any opinions on either of these options?

I like that I could remove the eTrex and download my info to my PC with the cables I have. I'd have to buy new cables to hook the Matrix unit to my PC. Something tells me the Humminbird GPS sensor might be more accurate than the eTrex and that maybe marking waypoints with it is easier than with the eTrex.

The Humminbird sensor won't do anything your Garmin doesn't. All the GPS functions in your Matrix are already built into it; the only thing the receiver does is receive and process the satellite data and calculate your position. In either case the position data is then plotted, saved, navigated to, etc., by the Matrix (and similarly by your Etrex).

Accuracy likely won't be any different between the two receivers.

I hooked my Garmin GPSMap76CS up to my Matrix 47 just for grins. It works fine but the Matrix doesn't have maps built in and I don't think it accepts added maps. So I rarely use the connection; it's sometimes handy if I want to be able to see my speed and course a little easier from the back of the boat (where I have my Humminbird) instead of at the helm where my normal connection for the Garmin is.

I have the Matrix 12 and I hooked up the GPS just before a trip last year to Clear Lake Calif! I used an Etrex before. I like the GPS on the Matrix only because of the larger screen!
