View Full Version : Ideas for Ifish Flyfishers get togethers
Lets' kick these around for the upcoming year. Feel free to add your own ideas
Here are a few of mine
Crooked River Spring Rendevous - We need a definate date for this. I'm planning on staying a few days but it needs to be near first of the month for me.
Deschutes during salmon fly hatch - Maupin area
Deschutes for summer steelhead - Lower river, Max Canyon or Maupin area
Fly tackle swap
Spey Clave at Sandy River in May
Cutthroat fishing on the Kilchis - Soon after the river opens back up
Hosmer lake w/pontoons or float tubes
Pontoon down the Wilson,Trask,Kilchis etc in spring or summer for cutts.
East Lake - A few of us can go in together and rent a cabin! Evening hatch is awesome
Lets try to do a few get togethers this year.
I'll probably be doing most if not all of the above this year.

Let's not forget flyfishing for Taimen in Mongolia. Always wanted to try that. A 30-40lb fish slamming a mouse pattern on the surface.
Stew, those ideas sound good. for the crooked, I'd do very late march, or very early april. The best spring time fishing on that river in my opinion.

i'm in for the deschutes in may for the salmon fly hatch... that is a good bet for lots of trout rising.

I'd sure like to see one on the Metolius for either the Green Drakes, or the Golden Stones. You can always mix in a little bull trout fishing too.
Lots of very nice campgrounds, or possibly do a couple rentals?

Here's another that would be great - Blitzen in September. I've always wanted to do that one.
Due to the distance, it would probably need to be at minimum a 3 or 4 day trip.

how about a John day float for smallies, that could be fun.
Blacktail, there are Bulls in the metolius?
The fall would be good, we could all crash at
fallriverguys house, right Brian?

Those activities all sound good. I can't tell which I will be able to participate in yet.
I think we should always be careful about overwhelming a piece of water with a bunch of fishers. But I think that can be handled with some care.
I really enjoyed tracking the progress of the Swordfish Team last summer as they tried to push the envelope of the Salty Dog fishers.
Maybe we should try to push the envelope for flyfishers. WIWAK (when I was a kid) I would read articles about flyfishing for striped bass on the east coast. I know there are supposed to be some striped bass in the estuaries of the Southern Oregon Coast, maybe even in the surf, but I seldom read anything about them. Maybe we should do some research and launch an assault of flyfishers on the striped bass. Then we can look silly as a group instead of just me by myself.
Or maybe we could try fly casting for surf perch. This is another flyfishing activity I sometimes read about, but I don't think may people in Oregon have done it.

Laurance Lake was a great gettogether... wasn't it Tanner. Hot day and the beach was busy with swimmers and dayusers but plenty of room in the water for the lot of us. Close to home too.
TC - flycasting for perch is a hoot! I'm sure it will be even more fun when I hook one. Pretty weird though, watching your line with one eye and the ocean with the other. Last time out I was wading ankle-deep and the surf was tagging me on the chin... no thanks. 15 minutes of that was more than plenty. Shortly after I quit S&R pulled 3 swimmers out of the surf.

I think it would be nice to do a get together at a nice cafe and drink some international coffee, and talk about our relationships... with our flyrods.
Or, maybe a barbeque restaurant? graemlins/dork.gif
Funny you should mention something about our relationships with our fly rods RK.When renowned steelhead fly fisher Mike Kennedy passed away he was cremated along with his favorite fly rod and the ashes were scattered along the Norht Umpqua near Mott's Bridge. I told my wife I wanted the same thing

Stew - that is truly touching, but why would you want to be cremated along with Mike Kennedy's favorite flyrod? Oh, I get it. You believe in reinrodcarnation. Are you going to tell us you have been fishing with his rod ever since it left this plane? graemlins/1zhelp.gif Thank goodness for Ifish, what other worthwhile diversion would a guy doing his taxes have? graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Sureyoubetcha GBS, I have all the room needed in my back yard for a large crew. The Fall River is still recovering from the spill so I would wait for that one. One lake not on the list is Davis.

I think a John Day Float would be awesome. I do it just about every year. If we wanted to do just a weekend float we could go from Service Creek to Twickenham. If ya wanted to make a 3 - 4 day float Twickenham to Clarno. The float is an easy driftboat float as long as you hit it over 1200 cfs. I have seen drifters go down in much lower water but there are a few spots where you will be dragging it.
The smallmouth fishing is incredible in both of those stretches. It is not unusual for us to hook over 100 a day each when we go.
I would really be into that.

I have a glass boat so low water is not too big of an issue. What type of flies do you throw at those buggers, and what time of year is best? I definitely want to do that trip.

Otolith,
I like to go anywhere from Mid May on into July. Last year my son and I did it over the 4th of July weekend and absolutely tore them up.
As far as flies, Poppers, wooly buggers, streamers
and even dead drifting larger nymphs has all paid off. My favorite though is fishing Poppers. White is best during the day and then black in the evening.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one interested in braving the surf for redtails. That might be a lot of fun and no worries about overwhelming a lake or river! In fact, the more rods spread out on the beach, the faster the schools could be found.
Another option might be a shad roundup. I would suggest the Willy simply because I think it's impossible to effectively flyfish the Columbia (I've tried, correct me if I'm wrong, - please!)
Or, FallRiverGuy mentioned Davis, - how about a Bass extermination campaign? It might be a fun way to give the trout a boost by holding a fish fry at the same time!
Just throwing some out there.
