I was just thumbing through my new Orvis catalog and was wondering what you guys thought about their Super Tac-L-Pak fly vest. Would it be a good investment?

I had one and sold it. You can actually put too much stuff in one of them. Find a vest with a minimum of pockets, it will force you to carry only what you need, not what you might need or could need someday.

What would be a better choice for someone that is restarting? I like to fish in the summer for cutts and bows and would like to be comfortable.

I wasn't aware that Orvis still sold fly fishing tackle/equipment.....must be sandwiched inbetween the dog beds and furniture.

I personally don't like a vest that has some many pockets and compartments that you need an instruction manual to perate it. I have one like that and I found a sandwhich in a pocket I never knew was there! At first I thought it was one of LNF's newly tied flies.
If you want pockets though, I'd recommend the
henry's fork by columbia.

Greenbutt -
Fishkid - a little food for thought. I made a lanyard with clips (large snapswivels) that comfortably holds my nippers, pliers, gink, tippet, etc.. Easy to make and perfect for summer and winter fishing. I hardly use my vest anymore. lnf

William Joseph makes some really nice quality alternatives to a vest. I switched to one last year that has two small compartments on your chest and a pocket in back. I really like mine. I think fishpond also has some good alternatives.

What Rodwaver said.
I have too many pockets and fill them all.
When I took Steelhead School from Mark Bachmann on the Deschutes a couple of summers ago he said he had pared it down to a hook file and a small zip loc bag with some spare flies he stuffed into the front of his waders. Granted, he had a lot of other stuff in the boat he could get if he needed, but when he was wading and fishing it was down to the minimum.
