Fished the Crooked Sun & Mon with little success. A few decent size whitefish but only two trout. It was however very relaxing, and cold. I seem to have a heck of time with that river, any suggestions? We were using scuds, eggs, midge, anything and everything. Did stop in Maupin on way back to hit the big river and it made for a better trip. Still a good bit of snow in that area.

I go there a lot and I always do great. I use pheasant tails, prince nymphs and tan elk hair caddis. They always work great for me. I think it was at poison butte, not for sure. There was a long straight away. A lot of guides fish there with there clients. Use a strike indicator and a pheasant tail. It should work very well.

Thanks for the info, was using 14-16 PT as the first bug. Must have just been a bad weekend for us, we did see other fish being caught. I believe they were mainly whitefish.

O,
What part of the river were you fishing? The last 3-4 miles up below the dam are the best and have the greatest concentration of rainbows to whitefish. The shoud be blue wing olive hatches now, and the orange scud is always good, but only if fished at the proper depth and type of water.
This time of year can be a little tougher for numbers of fish, so as it warms I hope your success improves.

Brian, good call on the brassies in the riffles. Can i give another hint if you want trout and not whitefish? Use BIG flies! My last 2 trips weve been using BIG green woolly buggers and have caught very nice trout and only 2 whitefish which were both snagged of course. Ive just been drifting the buggers under an indicator around submerged boulders. Please keep this a secret though! I love when people dont know about it and you fish a drift right after them and pull out some nice trout. Remember, its our little secret!

Thanks alot guys, I will log this into memory for next trip. I was mainly using 14-18, maybe a 12 pupatator, but nothing bigger than that. Mainly midges and scuds, they were heavily weighted, constantly picking "crud" off the bugs. Maybe too deep? We were fishing within a couple miles of the dam. Thanks again for the info, your secrets are safe with me!!!
