Hello Brethren of the Mosca-
I have a cheap fly setup by way of inheritance (gramps only dabbled in the fly arts,). It's an eight weight Eagle Claw 8'6" rod and a Cortland Vista D L reel. Should I toss them? Can I use them to try and fly fish for surfperch and things of that nature? I have not fly fished in a good long while, but would like to get back into it. Thanks Ahead of time!

Grampa's old fly pole? Keep it! Fish with it a few times and realize that fly fishing is a lot of fun, then spend 10 years obsessing about flyfishing and buying expensive equipment, then one day see gramps' rod sitting in the corner and go catch a nice fish with it. You'll feel GREAT.
I'm with Riverkeeper. About 5 years agoI started into tackle fishing for trout after a long absence from childhood, and a couple years later tried flyfishing when my dad gave me his old rusted-up spring-loaded flyreel. I got the reel to work but have never fished with it, but that reel began my present obssession.

I have a $5 fly rod and reel combo I bought from friend which new probably cost $15. That is the fly rod I let my daughter learn on and it will most likely be the rod my grandkids learn with as well.

yes, keep it for sure, especially since it was gramps rod. Just for the sentimental value. If you have a kid and he catches a fish with it, THAT's what it's all about. The old stuff is fun to hold onto anyway, I'll never part with my old stuff, too many good memories wrapped up in it.
