I've been experimenting with tying schlappen bead head flies using the same patterns as my jigs. Here is one of them:

http://www.firstcastjigs.com/store/pictures/Fly_pinktailaaa.jpg

These bead head flies are tied on a #6 wet fly hook.

If anyone is interested in field testing one of these and reporting back to me of their results, drop me an e-mail at

firstcastjigs@firstcastjigs.com

Thanks Guys

Mark

Wow! Those look like they would be effective for winter steelhead fly fishing. Sign me up for a sample to use with my spey rod.

Beautiful.

I'd sign myself up for the demo, but my time spent fishing to steelhead caught ratio is embarassingly low.

It just wouldn't be a valid test.

I think they look killer for large trout as well. Some dark colored patterns would be great in addition to the bright colors.

Mark,
Sorry I missed you at last weeks postponed Steelheaders meeting. I don't know what colors you have, but I'd love to try a red or black or your favorite and give you my feedback. A mutual friend speaks very highly of your products. Lets just call him the lead inline man. I'll send you an e-mail.

Yup, those are highly effective for winter steel. Basic Cook "popscicle" type flies that have been tied for about 20 years or more now. Have been using them on the OP (tied up on usually 2-2/0 fly hooks) for quite a few years. Except use a lead underbody for weighting vs. bead head. But they are successful. Work great.

I have yet to pick up a fly rod & reel so I don't claim to be an accomplished fly fisherman at all but it is fun tying them. I have however caught several winter fish by drift fishing flies. The picture in my first post is the same pattern as my Tail Flasher Jig...Pink schlappen with a shrimp tail and matching Krystal Flash. I just tied it up and took a picture.

If there is a specific color pattern anyone would like to try, please shoot me an e-mail and I'll get one out to you.

Every Summer and Fall when I'm sight fishing for summer steelies I keep telling my self the same thing. Maybe this is the year I'll take the next step.

The fly is gorgeous and the photo is first class.
From what I hear from the gear guys, First Cast is First Class.

I will be fishing with a guide on the Quinault on the 27th and I would be pleased to give that fly a test.

And it is still true, I have never caught a winter steelhead under 17 lbs. on a fly. I hope to be able to revise my true statement after the 27th.

Mark, are these flys weighted bodies or is it just the bead that gives them the weight? can we have them with weighted bodies for a quicker sink rate, just curious

The only weight on the flies is the bead head itself. If you're interested in larger heavier flies Send me an e-mail and we can discuss it.
