the idea of making my own rods sounds great, but im having difficulty finding a sturgeon sized blank, i like lamiglass's but am up for a change. i would like a 9 foot, 20-50 lb line, 2-6 oz, fast action. do you guys know any blank that would suit me?

thanks, joe

Are you fishing from a boat? Why 9'? Keeper or Oversize?

On keepers and many other critters it is really hard to pass up on the Rainshadow SWS597 - its not rated to 50# and its 7'10" but you can feel a winter water nibble and still have anchor pulling backbone behind it.

I agree, a little more info would help.

But if you're fishing off the bank. I would recommend something longer then 9 ft.
I would stick to a 12 ft plus blank.

Also, check out Angler's Workshop site. They will have most of the blanks that you're seeking.

There's also the Seeker ULUA 100 which is also 10'. I also noticed that Lamiglas had some yellow glass bank rods, pushing 12' or so.

Hope this helps, too!!

I have a built Rainshadow SU1418, Lamiglas gsb 1502mh, gsb 1621mh, gsb 1322m, off the shelf ron arra 1322m, and off the shelf breakaway hdx if you want to check out each rod's properties before building.

My first sturgeon rods were the lamiglas fiberglass, but everything about fiberglass and fiberglass/graphite composites went out the window once I've upgraded to full graphite.

If I were to build another sturgeon rod, I would try a rainshadow SUR1569, lamiglas 1562h, or a gloomis su1448. These three would probably be in my opinion the next big hit in the east coast surf fishing industry.

The majority of my surf rods are lamiglass and they are for a reason. They've been ahead in surf fishing rod technology longer than any other maker. And yes, in my humble opinion they are worth every penny. You wont find any other rod with the power:weight ratio, reflex, and sensitivity other than the lamiglas blanks. Since you're going custom, you minus will go all out graphite.
