After reading the latest edition of STS magazine I must admit I am confused about what lb leader to use when tieing kokanee hootchies. They have not performed well for me at Merwin the last two years so could use some advice. We all have our favorite setups and mine is a protroll most of the time but I know there is always a better way. I went from 6 lb p line to 8 lb pline and just havent picked up the catch ratio much. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I use 8 or 10 pound stiff leader to help translate the kick of the dodger into twitch of the hootchie. I tried the plastic protroll flashers but have better luck with metal dodgers (flashers rotate, dodgers roll side to side but don't roll over, giving off a thump, thump, thump).

After a fishing trip to Crescent Lake last year I started using a much heavier line on my hootchies, up to 15#. All of my friend’s hoochies were tied with 15# line and a leader length of 6” to 8”. He had a lot better success with his hoochies then I did. Mine were tied with 6# line and a leader length of 8” to 10”.

I did catch a few kokes at Merwin last year with hoochies but I had better luck by adding a spinner and 16” of leader.:twocents:

I just posted this on another thread...go with Seaguar flourecarbon...P-line would probably work also, but I've had great success with 10lb Seaguar in low clear water while summer steelie fishing...so I figured what the heck, should work great for koke setups...I've had great success in doing so...I'll run 15lb ultra green main line to my downrigger release and 10lb Seaguar leaders to my lures...when long lining I'll run the ulta green to my terminal gear and the seaguar as leader...the combo works great to save gear and knock the kokes dead.

I've tried the Seaguar before. The 9# is about the same as 4lb ultra green. While I really liked certain aspects of the seaguar as it performed just like mono with the stretchiness and added bonus of near invisibity in water, it has very limited use for many of my applications and I have therefore returned to using 8lb ultra green for both my wr spinners and hootchies. Thrashing kokanee left the seaguar leaders in knots and the fine diameter did not transfer the action of my dodger to the lure.
