I'm thinking of pontooning if with my wife in early nov. May be kinda cold out, but I bet fish would be eager. Any ideas? Has anyone fished it late in the year.
I know the get together was there last time, was it a productive piece of water.
Thanks,

Just a thought GBS...but that cold water may be what turned your butt green?

hummmm.... That's always possible. Let's hope we don't have to call the wife "Mrs. greenbutt".

Fishing was good at the outing and Laurance is a great lake for tooning. The inlet on the near bank opposite the dam produced a plethora of fat cutbows... the catch there seemed endless. Tanner hiked up the inlet at dusk and came back with a  .

lilnorthfork,
A "plethora", is that more of less than a limit?
I love catching a plethora of trout, sounds crazy!

Yes, a plethora is definitely more than a limit. And with the all the different species available in Laurance, one might say the offing is a veritable cornucopia. Have you rigged pontoons up to the bassinet yet? graemlins/idea.gif

You might find yourself enjoying the solitude of
a closed lake. It close's with regular trout season on Oct. 31st.

Yeah ?
The inlet has been closed to protect Bull Trout since the Dam was built. State Threatend species.
Did they open it this year ?

Sure those were cuttbows and not bull trout? ODFW protects the inlet because it's a bull trout spawning area.
Also, check regs - I think most cascade lakes stay open year-round - if you can get to them and the roads are not closed due to snow.

I fished the lake 'near' the inlet but saw no indication of the inlet being closed to fishing. How would one know it is protected water?
As far as cutbow v. bull, I've never seen a bull trout live and in person but have caught my share of cuts (used to live a 10 min. walk to the Snake in Grand Teton Natl. Park). Do Bull Trout have cuts? Maybe it was a cutbull?!
Seriously, I would never knowingly fish protected water so how would one know it is protected if it is not marked at the site or listed in the regs?
BTW, regs state Laurance open April 26 to Oct. 31.

There are buoys/markers that indicate the fishing deadline near the sloughs of the inlet. I think last time I was there, there were special restrictions posted on the reader board in the parking lot.

You'll want to stay to the SE corner of the lake (Do lakes have corners?) to keep out of the wind if there's any at all.
Don't think you should have any trouble mistaking bulls with anything else in Laurance.
I surveyed the Clear Branch for the Forest Svc. this summer and to my knowledge there is no part of the reservoir closed to fishing.
...and I'm not kidding here...they actually found a sturgeon in there earlier this season that someone had planted but no bait allowed so I don't know how you could target one.

The fish we were catching were cuttbows. Also some very nice native cutthroat. I got one of 17" on a dry fly. I also caught one bull trout about 8". (I know what bull trout look like  ).
I didn't actually hike up the inlet, I went as far up as I could get with my pontoon boat (without getting off of it).

That is a Bull Trout, A Cuttbow looks like a Rainbow but with more spots and red slashes under it's gills.

Hey Tanner... I wondered if you were out there... where you been hiding?
I spoke with a fisheries biologist in the Dalles today... real nice guy who did a real nice job of running up my phone bill. He said the deadline is where the inlet is flowing water vs. the still water of the lake. The Clear Branch, as with all branches of the Hood River, is closed to fishing. In the past the Forest Service has put out the buoy markers as a courtesy but perhaps did not do it this year (it definitely was not there when we fished it). He was curious if people are catching smallmouth there. They were introduced and are most unwelcome. Thanks for the civil discussion... we all want what is best for the bulls.

LNF,
We need to hook up and do a nookie trip or something. I'll show ya the proper way to eat a sandwich with egg goo all over your hands.
