I've never fished for them. I don't have the boat for it. It would be interesting to learn something new though.

I've only gone once and did catch a fish, had a guide. It was in Feb in Irrigon and the water was somewhere between darn cold and freezing. Air temp that morning was 14 degrees! Got a bunch of stuff ready to try again, Rufus is only about an hour away. Haven't a clue how to really do it but boy do they eat good! Where is a boat launch in Biggs other than across the river?

I'm curious. Why do people get all bent out of shape about eating bass, but feel that eating walleye is OK? Not trying to start anything. Just curious.:throb::food::food::food::throb:

:yeahthat: I've wondered this for years. I think it's just the mentality of the fisherpeople. Not sure if there is any science behind wether eating more bass would make them go away. Bass fisherpeople just always seem to care more about their species in my humble opinion. :twocents:

I've never dared to ask the same of salmon fisherpeople (just to be fair I started this spring and I'm into it now too!) that complain about the restrictions and run sizes. I don't see many of them saying they are returning hatchery fish to help the population grow. Curios

I fish walleye a lot. Prefer salmon but they're a long ways from home and not always available. I believe people get more sensitive with killing bass than walleye because a lot of people view walleye more as food fish rather than sport fish. Since they're just food, killing them is no different than killing chickens.

Personally, I love catching any and all fish and don't assign any more importance or elite class to any one species (salmon, steelhead, and bass included).

Just my :twocents:.

I would say in Eastern Washington, #1 rig for walleye is the double hook blade rig bottom bouncer with a nightcrawler slowly trolled.

There is a boat launch up by Rufus on oregon side or Maryhill state park on WA side

Curious.....are the results up for the Spring Classic out of Umatilla yet?

Sunday was cancelled due to high winds.
Saturday was a soaker- rained all day. The bite was slow.
top team had 19 pounds. 2nd place had 1 fish of 14.5 pounds. Big drop off after about 5th place. My team had 1 fish for 3.88 pounds for 16th place out of 48 teams.

Since they're just food, killing them is no different than killing chickens.Funny how people are like that. I suppose that a lot of walleye fishers shudder when talk gets started about eating their favorite fish too. In the south, most folks look at bass as groceries too. That's why I don't get too excited when someone tells me I shouldn't be eating bass. I would really love to have some walleye for dinner again. I have only tried them once and they were so good. Maybe I'll get one by accident when I'm bassin this year. I'm convinced that I had a couple on last year at Cascade Locks that broke off.

I have yet to catch a Walleye, but I have eaten several that others have caught, and it's the taste that justifies the frying pan, imo. I hear what the eye guys are sayin anbout letting the big fat hens to breed another day. I also don't see a probelm w/ keeping some smaller bass from a fishery such as the columbia, as it probably actually would help the fishery to thin some smaller fishies.
Hey Arkie, we ought to wet a line this summer--as soon as my Heels finish up Monday night I'll be ready to hit the river! sounds like we H&F alot of the same areas!

I love fishin for 'eyes and they eat great too! Anybody know where a poor young bankie can get some good walleye fishing done? Also what are the bankies using to trick the 'eyes?

Bruce, thanks. I was hoping you'd say it was show'n tell time.
Can't do the fishout. Last weekend was my free weekend. This weekend I'm Kid Duty.
Mike

Wannasteelhead, bank'n for eyes is a pretty tough deal. My suggestion would be to try shallow flats at night.
Maybe a jig w/ stinger hook & worm and a slip bobber. Try and keep the jig 1ft off the bottom.

My theory on why people are more bent out of shape over bass harvest is because of a couple of things:

1. NW weather causes a shorter growing season for bass, especially largemouth. Fish that exceed 5# are much harder to come by than in the south. Walleye thrive locally and grow to be of trophy quality in a fair abundance.

2. I think walleye also have a reputation as a food fish because, in general, they are better to eat than bass. The value of bass as a sport fish outweighs their value as a table fish.

A lot of it is probably attributed to publicity also. The BASS would probably get a lot more heat if the fish were all kept or killed. Just look at the heat that goes toward whitetail shows.
