Loading up the boat and headed for Montana this Friday. It's my birthday and I want to celebrate it in style. Going to head east on the back roads. Starting out headed
towards Imnaha and going over to Pine creek area. Going to mozzy my way to
Yellowstone Via Boise. Hope to get at least a couple good days of drifting one of those fine Montana Streams like the Madison, Henry's fork. Depends on Weather and the mood I am in.
Do you think I can scratch the surface in Ten days ?
Of course I have plenty of Flies on hand. The Madison really stick in my mind as a
great place to go. Can't wait till Friday.

Nice call Abalone. great B-day present for yourself. I did a similar route last year. Fished the Wallowa, then went up hwy 3 out of Enterprise. Great country. Then headed over the Lolo Pass, up the clearwater out of Lewiston. Fantastic drive from there to Missoula. Fished along the way a little. Maybe north of where you are going, but it was a great trip...capped off by floating the Bitteroot, Clark Fork, and one of the Flathead forks. My boys in Whitefish hooked my up. Plenty of guides up that way too if interested. Say hey to all the cutties and big rainbows for me!

Thanks J.Slay. I've been wanting to do a trip like this for a long time. Up through Lewiston ?
All the Hiways go North and South. I wish I could trek my way cross Idaho Going East. I have
been screening the maps but haven't figured a good route. Oh well ! I love winging it.
I will just play it by ear as I go. So long as I have my Fly Rod handy there should be no disappointments. My wife did ask me last night. Are you going to fish or is this going to be a Fun
trip ? This is not a good omen.

There is a east west route across Idaho. You start at a town called Dixie, population about 8.
It is a rough dirt road and takes about 5 hours to go 100 miles . The locals call it the Montana road because that is where you end up (Hamilton Montana). It is one of the most impressive drives ive ever made. It is stunning. id. painter

Thanks painter. That's the kind of stuff I want to hear.
I will probably take Hwy 12 coming back.
I can't wait.
Have you guys seen this site.
I found it on the map. You know that just might work. I have a four Wheel drive van
and it loves roads like that.

Not exactly your friendly interstate.
Towing a boat Painter, you still think that would be a good route ?
When does it start to snow at that elevation ?

During Elk season lots of out of staters bring R.V.,s towing averything including the kitchen sink.
the road is basiclly a one lane dirt road ,there are pull offs and camp spots along the way. I think you could tow a boat over it but you wil be going very slow . There is a chance that you will meet someone going the other way and it could be a little tricky depending on the spot in the road. The hunters all tow horse trailers. The early Elk hunts are going on now in those units .Could be busy.
This area will start getting some serious rain / snow in late sept and oct. Might be a drive for next time. sure is pretty. id. painter

Painter - is that the road on which is located 'Sleeping Child Hot Springs'? Is it still open to the public?
