Went fishing again today, after I tarped the baseball field. I was fishing for about an hour until I got my first bite. I missed him. I threw the bait back to the same spot, he bit it again and I missed him. Now, I throw the bait in the same spot for the third time and I get bit again and I actually hook up this time. I land the fish, it's a good solid 3.5 pounder. I call my dad to tell him I caught a fish because I was fishing by myself for the first time. So I get off the phone and throw the bait in the same area and I catch another fish that is about 3.5 pounds. Not three casts later, I land a nice 5 pounder. A few casts later, I catch one that is a little bit bigger. I keep on fishing for another 15 minuets then I went home. All of these fish fought well.:meme:

Here are the pictures of the five pounders:

Nick that's awesome- nice job! Those photos are great reference pics- thanks a ton for them! Those fish are so perfect it's intimidating- they make me want to go back and repaint all the largemouths! he he.

One of these days Dave will get back into fishing.

I discovered that I'm a big sissy and scared to death but I am going to try really hard to get back on it this spring. I was thinking how furious Dale would be with me if I knew I didn't fish last spring!

DAVE ? Why must you live vicariously through your fishing friends on ifish? I hope i am not asking too personal of a question. Its just that i have noticed you mentioning this several times. We hope all is well in dave land.

Looking at the pic I would say a tube, brush hog, or sweet bever.

Also if you look close at the pics you will see that SF knows what he is doing when it comes to setting the hook. That ain't no rookie hookset. That my friend is someone who knows what they are doing.

Looks more like a swimbait, possibly a Castaic trout.

Judging by the Screen name, I'd say its a pepper colored SUPERFLUKE! hehe.....

I must ask 1BF....obviously the Fluke is no fluke.....I mean....he did catch the state record SMB.....but how can you tell he is a master of the hook set?.....it seems to me, that a man feels something tug, and he tugs back.....not too much science to it.....or is there?

Shouldnt someone who has mastered the magical art of "ripping lips" not miss 3 fish in a row? Not bustin on ya Fluker...your a better fish roper than I ever will be.

Honest questions....in my usual tongue in cheek "schtik".....but I'm interested as I just might learn something.

The fish that i missed two times and hooked the third time was small, only about 3.5 pounds. That's why I missed him two times. I usually don't miss that many fish, unless they can't get the bait in their mouth.

Now that I have my big monitor, I think you are right. On the small monitor I was unable to see that the pic was actually a top view of the swimbait.

There is much more to it. Besides the basics like no slack in the line, some baits require a side sweep motion, while others require a quick straight up motion. However I was more commenting on the first pick. Look at where the hook is... That is not an easy part of the jaw to punch a hook all the way through.

It involves taking up slack and snapping the wrists and some other things that I am not at liberty to divulge here.:D On the serious side, there are many different styles of hook sets that work for people. They have been discussed here on IFish as well. How long one waits to set the hook after the bite is detected, type of bait, type of line and type of hook all come into play. But I don't think that you can judge whether a man is a rookie or not by looking at a picture of a fish with a bait in it's mouth.

What I thought was hilarious is: I read Bill Siemantel's book and it has an entire chapter on how to set the hook with swimbaits (OK, that's funny enough right there), then I watched his video and guess what? When the fish bites he yanks back just like the rest of us- absolutely NOTHING like his "technique" he explained in his book! :D

Would you leave that poor fish alone three times is just mean. But seriously those are some nice fish they look like triplets. You still haven't said what bait you were using.

Great looking fish, but you can stop rubbing it in now. I still haven't even hooked my first fish for the year yet. :passout:

Looks like the swimbaits are working out for you this year!:applause:
