Hey gang...I'm going to be up in Zig Zag this weekend at a cabin on the Sandy river. I've never fished the Sandy this far up and while I know there are lots of opportunities at lakes in the area I was hoping for some insight as to the opportunities in this river this far up. Anybody fish this area much?

Hey there Buck, sorry to tlell you this, but what was once a great summer steelie river, is now as far as I know a total dud,in fact I'm not sure if the Zag is even open to steelheading any more. About ten years or so ago my buddy an I used to go up there and have a blast using light line,6-8# main line, and 5-6# leaders tossing sand shrimp tails. My buddy had a streak going of 13 fish for 13 trips to the Zag. Then some wise acres decided it would be best for the two remaning wild fish to have the river and they shut off the hatchery fish down at Marmot. End of that fishery! There still might be trout up there, but not the steelhead we used to fish for. Have a good time up there anyway, should be beautiful this time of year! Good luck to ya!

I've caught steelies in the sandy that far up, but it's been a few years. An eare behind the weight station just down from zigzag, under the bridge.

I just posted a similar post the day before Labor Day about Welches. In addition to the posts, I spoke to the locals. There is no fishing allowed in the Sandy above Marmot. :hoboy: Every local I spoke to redirected me to fish Marmot Dam below the deadline. Good luck!
