View Full Version : Macks Canyon on the Deschutes
How is the road looking these days? I heard it's pretty rough.

I went down two weeks ago and it was not too bad. Lots of washboard. I went 0-3.

Worse part of the road is Pine Tree to Jones. Still a few sharp rocks kicking around. Some washboard approaching the hill and downside at Beavertail but after that you can drive like a maniac but not adviseable as the BLM and OSP are down there a lot.
Take it easy and enjoy the scenery.
Should be a ton of fish down there now, if not, very soon.

It was so much more peaceful down there before the BLM "improved" the road.

It was even more peaceful before BLM installed the road and it was float access only.

I remember going down to Macs Canyon some years ago with my wife and two daughters for a weekend camp/fishout. I had been there many times but not my wife and daughters. After the road trip in (coughing and weasing) which was 0 to maybe 4 mph I got into camp. My wife and two daughters had to make a outhouse run right off the bat. About 5 minutes later here they come running and screaming at me. They found one of those big rattle snakes sunning himself right on the road inside the campgrounds. Man that was a hoot. Next day and a half of great fishing. That was the last trip for that Ford PU to Macs. It took a beating and I traded her off the next week. Fun times at Macs thats for sure over the years. That road does keep the meek out of there but not always.

I liked it better before the road was improved also. I just laugh at those guys who hual arse down that road, their the ones you see in the lot at Macks with flat tires, sometimes 2 at a time!!
I fish all over the place but the most memorable trips of all were/are at Macks Canyon in October when the crowds thin out & the evenings begin to get cold.

i've driven that road many times in the past couple years in a toyota pickup, tercel, and a corolla with no flats and no problems. average spead around 15-20 mph.
last i heard , the deschutes is blown out below the white river, although the white river glacier is supposed to freeze tonight. also, i'm not sure how far below the white, it is blown, it might be fine a few miles below the falls.
