Being the rookie fly fisherman I am, I have only had the joyous experience of tying a few trout and steely patterns that a buddy taught me. So, I am interested in learning more of the fine art of fly tying from a good book. Where better to ask than from all of you vets?
Any suggestions?
Thank alot

Not sure what kind of flies you plan to tie, but Randall Kaufmann's books are really hard to beat for detail on flies for this area. They are expensive, but most libraries have them. The titles are pretty much self explanatory: Tying Dry Flies, Tying Nymphs, and Lake Fishing with a Fly are all top notch! If you need further assistance, his shop in Tigard is in the phone book and if you drop in when they aren't busy, you can get a tip or two from their very knowledgable staff.

Go with what Pete said and I would add The Complete Book of Western Hatches by Rick Hafele and Dave Hughes.

Jack Dennis's books Western Torut FLy Tying Vol I and Vol II. Awesome books with great directions and step by step photo's. Not much on salmon and steelie flies, but for trout they're tops!

If you want only one book, I suggest "Flies of the Northwest" by the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club. It covers everything proven effective in the region for pan fish to King's, fresh or salt.
And not just flies, but great basic info about seasons and hatches and ...........
Check Powells.com for new or used books, another NW secrete. They must have a 1000 fly fishing books.
You can't go wrong with Kaufmanns book.

"Essential Trout Flies" by Dave Hughes. You can't go wrong with any of Hughes' books.

I totally agree on the Flies of the Northwest book if you want one with proven NW patterns and some well done, good reading. I have twenty or thirty pattern books and a couple CD Roms, and I always come back to that one. It's really well done.
You can check out fourteen pages of it at amazon, where it's $25 with free shipping. Check out this link to it:

The best starter book I have is mentioned above, Dave Hughes' "Essential Ttrout Flies." It not only teaches you how to tie, but its an excellent reference forever, with virtually all the styles and patterns for trout, but the number of patterns is not overwhelming at all.

Thanks Guys! So far I have Randall Kaufmann's Tying Dry Flies , and The Complete Book of Western Hatches by Rick Hafele and Dave Hughes. Both are GREAT books. Next on the list are:
Essential Trout Flies by Dave Hughes and Flies of the Northwest by the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club.
With all of those I should become a master in about what 20 years?
Thanks again,
