Crescent Lake is open all year right? I am just curious why Diamond, Odell, and Waldo aren't ? They are all around the same size and in the same in the same general vicinity. I have asked a few fishermen and havent come across an answer yet.

About 20yrs ago there was a period of a few years most all the lakes were open year round. Good trout lakes like Diamond and Howard Prairie were awesome thru the ice. Of course some idiots got out there on ATV's and broke thru and a few drowned so they quickly closed it again. Also I don't think the resorts appreciated not having the big "Opening weekend" extravaganza $$. There was also boat ramp access issues in the snow.

I think part of it at Odell anyway was the amount of VERY LARGE lakers that were taken out of the ecosystem. I know of 2 people that went with a guide and caught a 30 pounder and a 24 pounder in a day of fishing and released over a dozen more. Both were kept. The guide said that was a pretty average day. Multiply that by a bunch of trips and there you have it. Just hearsay though and my opinion. Waldo gets a ton more snow as it's on the top. Is that road even open in the winter?

but ODFW could have fixed that by making it catch and release of lake trout over a certain size...

or by closing the lake to idiots on ATV's looking to keep the local rescue divers in practice. I swear, some people do some amazingly dangerous things behind the wheel, but put them on an ATV or a snowmobile and look out. nothing but good sense and thin ice keeping you from being an obituary there, ace.
Apologies to anyone that has lost a friend to an ATV accident, but I have personally seen too many bodies to think those things are anything less than deadly dangerous. Fun, yes. Do you have a right to own and ride one? durn right. Will I ever take off across the dunes at full speed or up a grade that could cause a backflip, or out onto a lake? Um, no I don't think so.
I hope we aren't all missing out on what sounds like some amazingly good ice fishing because of a few guys out exercising their rights to risk their own lives if they feel like it, but that sounds like the kind of knee jerk reaction I would expect from ODFW.
