I would like to make it to Gold Lake at the end of Sept., and would like to know what best to use at that time of year. I know what to use in the spring, but fall fishing there has me fishless and clueless. I like to fish down and dirty.
Thanks,
Gary K.

Fuzzy things and wolly buggers with muddlers minnows. Try a lot of bug spray too. It helps.

I know about the famous bugs there, in the fall they are almost gone along with most of the people, a most quiet place to fish that time of the year. I'll try some fuzzy things.
Thanks,

Depends what your targeting the Brookies or the Rainbows. For the brookies work the edges 4-10 feet and throw a prince nymph 14-16 and be ready the second it hits the water. They will often pick it up in the first 6 inches so no need for a sink tip. For the Rainbows be ready to work chironomids into the depths. Let them sink in 15-25 feet and slowy retrieve them.

I Target Brookies there and generally fish down and dirty. What has the size been lately. I know they are trying to get ride of them but they are a good fighting and eating fish.

I've been trying to make an annual fall trip to Gold lake and the Brookies always seem willing. They seem to be fairly agressive near the top during the fall for some reason. They don't get oversize and the biggest is probably 16-17 inches. The rainbows get a little more hefty but take a little more patience letting the chironomid time to sink and the slowest retrieve but it's fun to mix it up.

I've never got one that big there, most of the ones that I got run 12" to 14" which are nice size Brookies. I did have one fish hit early in the morning, made my reel scream and the minute I touched the reel the leader parted, I always wondered how big that fish was. Do you fish out of a boat or tube? I've done both but get nasty looks when I use the boat, I leave the outboard on. I've checked with the State Troupers and they said ok if you don't fire it up.

That could have been one of the good size bows. The bigger brookies seem to be more agressive and colorful as the fall spawning gets started. They also seem to be bigger at the far end of the lake near the creek inlet.
Toon boat is about the right size for Gold lake.. but I've thought about a 10' pram would be the way to go to target the rainbows.

I had a 10' john boat I used to use, it worked great for the small pot hole lakes that I fished. It wasn't the best for standing up to cast, if you were sitting it was fine. It was only good for one person. I will probably use my float tube if I make it up there this fall. I like fishing out of it, the only disadvantage of it is that it take a lot of time to cover a lot of water.
