I posted this picture on another Goose Lake thread on the main fishing page...but thought I'd tell about my weekend at Goose Lake.
My friend Tommy and I headed up for a 2 1/2 day trip with our float tubes and all the gear anyone would need for a lifetime of being outdoors. We started the weekend by fishing just before dark on Friday and didn't manage a single bite. We thought for sure we'd catch something for dinner and didn't manage a single bite?? Previous outings there led to a bounty of fish..but so far nada. Headed back to camp and cooked up some Elk meat that I'd brought along. Sat up and told stories of our youth til midnight.
Woke up at 7 on Saturday morning to get some breakfast before the 11am hatch of calabedis. Hit the water around 9 and didn't get a single nibble on everything offered. Then it was 11am and the hatch was on...so I tied on the emerger and it was a catch and release frenzy. After about ten minutes switched over to the adult calabedis and managed to keep the catching going. I kicked over to Tommy to see how he was doing (he's not much into fly fishing...he fished a corkie and worm off the bottom) unfortunately he hadn't caught a single fish all morning. Then I noticed another hatch and it was 1pm....so I "recomended" to Tommy to try an emerger on his dusty fly rod that he always brings along...and he was soon into fish also. Most of the people fishing the lake were trolling or plunking worms...and not having a high catch count..we on the other hand we hooking fish left and right. Tommy kept 2 for dinner and we headed back to do some mtn. bike riding and check out the wildlife in the area. Several Bald Eagles were flying overhead...diving occasionally for the fish that some people don't revive...I guess the Eagle needs to eat too. While riding around camp I stopped and chatted with a fellow camper and he notified me that there were 150 8lb Steelhead planted in the lake a few weeks prior to our arrival...and since he'd been there for 2 weeks himslef..he knew that none had been caught.
Sunday morning came and I was bound and determined to catch myself one of those steelies. After trolling a worm for several hours around the lake...switching to my fly rod while the hatch was on...I managed to have 3 Browns swallow my worm and I had to keep em'. Here are the fish I brought home. http://www.ifish.net/uploads/162310231.jpg
I cooked them up for some friend we had over for dinner last night..and I tell ya, this picture doesn't do these fish justice. These three fish feed 3 adults...and we had a little salmon too...just to have a "variety". It felt good to be able to "provide" food for our feast.
