My dad is coming down this friday and I am looking for a place to take him to flyfish that is relatively close to Portland.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of trying for cutthroats in one of the coastal streams.

I shy away from the Deschutes because he would have trouble hiking far enough to get away from the crowds.

much thanks,

Try the Nehalem River. There is good access upriver from the falls - I even believe that the Oregon Department of Forestry has a campground up there. Not sure of the regs, but please practice catch and release on these fish.

Thanks for the thought. I ony keep hatchery steelhead and salmon. Everything else is released (hopefully to be caught again!)

Don't forget to post a report on how you do - whereever you go (unless a zipperlip - then just tell us how you did).

if you dont want to fish the coastal rivers i do alot of fly fishing on the upper clackamas, there are some good size rainbows and some cut throut and if you are lucky you can hook into a nice native summer steelhead.

Coastal Report.

My dad and I went in search of the elusive sea run cutthroat, which were... elusive.

After consulting with the OSP officer that pulled me over (one should not scout from the car while crossing a bridge), we headed up to the Nehalem. Saw one cut rise, caught a number of what can only be described as "fingerlings" and watched a dark steelhead jump so close my dad almost got splashed.

Spent some time trying to tempt the school of steelies in the hole across from the quarry. My adrenaline pumped a couple of times when one followed my nymph, but alas, refusal. Dad caught a nice 18 inch rainbow in the foam.

Beautiful river. I'll be back once the coast gets its first freshet.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I found pretty much the same thing friday. Fished the upper trask, my buddy caught two 10" cutts, probably residents. About 50 springers kegged up in one hole, but suprisingly enough they weren't interested in prince nymphs or wooly buggers.

Same thing on the lower Nehalem that afternoon- One more small resident fish. The Nehalem felt like it must have been about 75 degrees.

Fortunately, we didn't come home empty-handed
