View Full Version : FINAL Steelhead Fly Swap Progress Report 9/12

Stew

I have participated in two of those on other BBs and they are fun. Here is an outline of how it works
We'll need 12 tyers.
Each participant ties 13 steelhead flies of the same pattern. The extra goes to the "swapmeister" because it's his responsibility to distribute the flies to each particpant so he will actually receive 24 flies.
Each tyer will receive 12 flies, one from every other tyer....well almost
So who is in?

Update
Here is who has delivered their flies as of 9-12

I'll do Greased Liner
The swapmeister goes to the trouble of mailing, at his expense, the flies out to the tyers. My feeling is that he should get some kind of reward for his effort...any volunteers? Picture of Greased Liner (http://www.distantwaters.com/onlstore_aw/cng/fl450.jpg)

I'll sign up. Not sure which fly I'll tie. May just take whatever order I have at the time and tie up a few more. LOL.

Hmmm, I've meistered about 20 fly swaps. Not sure I want another one right now (just about to finish one up now). But, I could be persuaded. LOL

We'll need 12 tyers.
Each participant ties 13 steelhead flies of the same pattern. The extra fly each tyer ties goes to the "swapmeister"(probably me) because it's his responsibility to distribute the flies to each particpant so he will actually receive 24 flies or two of each pattern. He (me) will distribute the flies to each participating tyer either by mail or in person. I will pay shipping costs to distribute the flies.
Please tie 13 of the same exact pattern.
Each tyer will recieve 12 flies, one from every other tyer.

Send the 13 flies to that address and I'll take care of the rest. Be sure to include your return address.

How embarrassing! I sat down to crank out a bakers' dozen A-leeches, and OOPS!!! not enough barbell eyes.

Instead I'll contribute 13 copies of a (unnamed) shrimpy-looking marabou and soft hackle fly that got me into a few steelhead this past winter.

Jordan's flies are in the mail. TO ALL: please keep in mind that Jordan is 15 and has been tying for only a couple of years. On another note all of the fish I've landed on my Fly Rod have been caught on his flies.

I mailed mine this afternoon. I hope they measure up as I am more of an amateur.

Here is the scoop on the pattern I choose:

STEELHEAD PRINCE

Hook: Tiemco 200R #6
Thread: 3/0 black
Bead: 3/16 Brass
Lead: 0.035 wrapped
Tail: Goose biots - grey
Body: Peacock herl
Rib: Gold mylar #12
Legs: Rubber, white (round)
Wing: Goose biots - white

I fish this fly as a lead fly on a 2-fly dropper system - with the second fly about 10-15" below the first. I have had success using a small Copper John, pheasant tail or other nymph as the second fly - #14-#18. This pattern acts as both a weight and attractor for the second fly - though, steelhead will take the fly. Fish w/ floating line on a dead drift through steelhead looking slots and along ledges. More often than not, the steelhead will take the second fly. I came across this pattern and learned this technique on the upper Rogue River but have hooked up on Deschutes steelhead during the mid-day using this approach (but haven't landed them).

Variations of this pattern are what you can imagine - but the most obvious is brown or black legs instead of the white. I do not tie in the brown hackle like on a standard prince as the white rubber legs seem a bit overpowering.

I hope they produce for you.

Mojo's Flop Top:

Hook: Tiemco 7998
Thread: red Danville Flymaster
Tail: purple marabou
Rib: fine silver oval tinsel
Body: purple Scintilla dubbing
Wing: black straight cut zonker strip (tied down only in the front. The flopping wing attracts fish, specially in slower water).
Hackle: purple schlappen

If you want pics, e-mail me. Feel free to substitute colors...the pattern works  !
Vary the colors too...

Steelheader69 - thanks again for the offer sorry for the late response to your email. I was in Newport on the Irish for Tuna and then went to Mt Hood lakes for Float Tubing and just saw your email. Many apologies and glad you laughed about the nonreply from me. I need to get a laptop for road trips to keep up on ifish, but then that is why I fish to get away from the phone and biz.

The fly swap is complete! Thanks go to all who graemlins/applause.gif contributed
Since we have twelve sets and ten tiers everyone will receive an extra pair of flies so you will indeed get an even dozen.
