Hello Ifish. I'm a newby to this board and a relatively new fly-fisherman as well (~1yr). I'll be taking my nephews up to Trillium this weekend (too bad it's not going to be freshly stocked for them) to do some fishing and camping. What flies/presentation should I use up there and where? Any better lakes in that area for camping/fishing? I don't mind hiking to them, but I am taking a boat (no motor) this weekend.
Thanks for the help  ,

Might be a good spot for the fish-chow-pellet fly!
Typically the bobber & bait show for the kids - I've never hooked anything on a fly there, didn't try much - too busy untangling reels, baiting hooks, etc. Fun!

I know as a newby I should include a good fishing story or something. This is pretty funny, however it doesn't directly involve fly-fishing...
4th of July I was bass fishing with a couple of friends at Lake Billy Chinook. We were all on a boat enjoying the day and kickin' back a few cold ones when all of a sudden I feel a poke in my back and hear a loud snap (line breaking)! Yep, treble hooked in the back during a cast. The barb didn't go all the in so it wasn't too bad. But it doesn't stop there. The next day, same scenerio, only I am standing in the middle of the boat - not even fishing at the time - when I hear a "LOOK OUT!". A different buddy had gotten a snag in a tree and decided to jerk his pole directly towards the boat- smart. Well, his hook landed on my head, kind of lightly (so I thought). Oh, it won't be too bad - wrong! :depressed: It took me holding down my scalp and a buddy with a good pair of needlenose to get it out!
The weekend was still great, even with getting hooked twice.
I look forward to using this board.
Good fishing,
Waylon

Thanks lost_sailor. I don't think I'll get much of a chance to try flies either, but watching the boys hook into any size fish is priceless.

I have never fished Trillium but my lake fishing experience is that I do best with a sinking line. If you have a floating line put a very small split shot on. My theory is that they are biting on something so when I have tried all wet flies and nymphs I'll even sink dry flies. Very the speed of retrieve or troll. Morning and evening are best. The middle of the day is a good time for a nap. Of course with kids you won't get a nap.

I went fishing there about a month ago, and I only caught two 6 inchers. The fishing won't pick up again there until they stock again for Labor Day.
If you do try it, the fish will probably be deep most of the day. Your best chance will be in the evening. I usually use an intermediate line with an olive damsel or a small woolly bugger. Also, if you don't mind catching 6 inchers, there are a lot of little brook trout up against the weeds.
Here's a link that might help you out. I usually troll back and forth around the area that is 8' to 12'.

You also might want to consider Lost Lake or Timothy Lake.

Yep that lake is overfished so go early or late with a black or green wooly bugger. Something black or brown or insect green in a small size if you see them rising. Other wise go deep and worms if you want to impress the kids. Might take some skeeter repellent.

Well, newbie that is a great lake for scenery! And the fishing can be good at times. If you dont mind a 45 minute hike with beautiful scenery and nice trail and good brooky and cutt fishing at the end try Mirror Lake. Poorly marked, its the brown foot bridge at the bottom of the long climb up to road to timberline cutoff. Its where you wll see all the cars pulled off. These are mostly scenery folks with few (IMHO) fishers. I think you would be impressed. Lots of fish in that lake!
Just a thought!

Let's try this again. From one newbie to another. Extec is right on about the lake. I've gotten the most action trolling in a small rowboat along the weeds. Believe it or not just trolling a dry fly (anything big and brown) along the surface behind the boat. Also a worm on a ford fender is pretty successful there. Other places you might consider are frog lake (small) off HWY 26 around the back side of the mountain and Lawerence above parkdale. As for Lost Lake, it's the only place I've been in my whole life that I've been skunked......GRRRRRRR
Best of Luck with the young ones...
