Caught in Lake Pend Oreille today. About five lbs. Thought it was a Bow but then thought it could not be. Just didn't look right. Could be a Very light Brown. Maybe a hybrid. Caught twenty feet down in 38 degree water on a perch imitation Rapala. Or maybe its a Bull Trout. I'm new to this.

It's sure a beauty. The same fish if caught closer to fall when brown trout spawn, would be a lot darker with more defined coloring.

I have to agree with the others. Very light brown. A lot of years we catch them in suttle early in the year that are very "silvery" later in the year they get much darker with more browns and reds, awesome fish

Nice fish and photo!:applause: I think it's a brown too. You're question got me thinking about a bow-brown hybrid. I don't think they'd occur in nature if for no other reason than bows are spring spawners and browns are fall spawners. If anyone knows differently, please let us know.

Jaw extends beyond the eye, squarish tail=brown. If you stuck your finger in it's mouth and felt the "tongue" it would have well formed sharp teeth (vomers).

Really nice fish.

They won't hybridize with bows, but can have a purple/blue sheen to them when they are all silvered up.

Shes a brown. Take it from a former fish taxidermist who has painted about 100 of them. Their colors vary from lake to lake and time of year more than any trout except maybe cutthroat.

I think your right about that, WC. Just recently read something about trout hybrids. Tiger trout (brook/brown mix) are used in Utah for sports fishing and chub control. Splake (brook/lake trout mix) are gaining popularity in the Great Lakes region. All four spawn in the fall. I think both hybrids are sterile, but not really sure.

Thanks EVERYBODY!!!

I didn't expect to get this much response. This was the first fish caught with my new Duckworth on its first day in the water.

The fisherman is Calvin who owns Sandpoint Outfitters on Lake Pend Oreille. I was so happy that he caught this nice fish cause he did me the tremendous service of helping me through my 'new boat owner heeby jeebies' and got my boat in the water.
:applause:

PS: And I must add that this lovely specimen was out of the water for no more than twenty seconds. Calvin was adamant.

Heck of a way to get the first fish slime painted on the new boat:D. Again well done hopefully that is a sign from the fish gods as to what is coming for the new Duckworth on all it's trips:wink:.
