This summer I plan on using my 9ft6 float rod to flip senkos....
Am I nuts?

My buddy that I fish with says I am stupid as h*** to use my float rod...
I personally think there could be benefits to using a longer rod...
It has more sensitivity than any of my other rods.
And it could be good if I have to fish off the bank thru some blackberry bushes..

What do you all think?

Hahahahahaha

I don't know if a float rod would have the back bone to consistently get solid hooksets with a 3/0 hook inside of a senko. Just my :twocents:

So i guess if I fish in a tourney I cant use it. Cause I was told 8ft is the max.?

I wanna know the reasoning behind that rule.

I have been fishing mine for 2 years...................throw that senko a country mile.........just remember when you set the hook..............don't be sharing your area..............bloody noses and cranky friends!!! Works well for split shotting also.

the further you cast, the harder it comes to set the hook. With that long of a rod, i dunno about the backbone. And like mxracer said, i dunno if it will get a solid hook set through the senko.

Haven't had any issues with hook set................3" senkos even on that rod aren't going 100 yds. Have had days made the guy in the back of the boat .................run out and buy one. There are a million reasons to not try it..............kinds like in the 70s and early 80s don't fish a rod WITHOUT a PISTOL grip or over 6' it it it it it's impossible uncomfortable clumsy...............right........................ ...

Yep, you're nuts. There's a reason the big boys on tv dont do it...:twocents:

And you dont need super sensitivity to be effective with a senko. You'd be better served with a shorter rod that you could skip with...and not hit the other guy in the boat...and fit in a rod locker....and swing fish...

big boys on tv can't 8' limit............sensitivity has little to do with the choice...as it is a fiberglass blank. I have another rod to skip under docks.............and since tuna is your sub title do you bounce a yellow with a 100j .........yes...........swing s a fish in the boat quite easily and for the record that boat is only a 15'er.

Dee Thomas was the guy that first started everything with a jig and eel and a 14 foot pole. The length of the pole allowed him to stay so far off the cover and still be extremely accurate. Other anglers saw it as an unfair advantage (cause he was doing "too" well with it) so they began putting restrictions on the rod length.

14 foot is for weinies....I'd go get one of those sturgeon bank rods and really flip those senkos into the cover. Imagine the possibilities!

the two rods i use all the time for bass fishing are a 5'6" UL and a 9'6" ML. If you can put your senko where you're trying to put it, then who freaking cares what you use.

my god it sounds like a revolution and without the blessing of the TV GUYS...................guess we all need to wait for the TV GUYS to tell us what how and where to fish.............I feel better knowing the future and the path of all of bass fishing is safe in the hands of..........THE TV GUYS

i dont use a 5'6'' ultra lite cuz i dont feel i could handle a fish over 5lbs in n e kind of cover, and dont feel it could cast like well over 10lbs. i dont use a 9'6'' rod because i dont want to hook set into my friends ear and try to shove it in my rod locker. but suite what works for u :D

i just bought a berkley lightnin rod, 8' 6 ', med hvy, and am cutting about 7 " off the handle to make it more casting friendly. (i don't hit my beer gut as much) So i effectively have a 7' 11" bass rod. i plan on casting it tomorrow, so i will let you know....it was on sale at Fisherman's Marine for $24.99....

I guess the only frame of referance I have is FLY FISHERMAN! those guys have wippy 9 ft sticks and some of them catch a ton of nice bass, granted they usually arent using plastics. But then again your 9 ft rod isnt going to be as wippy as a fly stick.

It will work....if you make it work.

That said....bigger isnt always better.

That said....Only one way to find out...

OK...it is awesome! :meme:I cut off 6.25" of the handle with a cold beer or 4 and a hacksaw.....in that order. It felt odd, like the time I used a chainsaw in my kitchen to cut a hole for some new duct work, but the end result was the same.... great. I taped the cork with masking tape first to keep it a clean cut...worked like a dream. It throws a country mile and the quick-ish tip is very sensitive, at least to the rocks and stumps I fished for 3 hours Sunday. I fished plastics and crank baits, and especially liked fishing slash baits with it, b/c you get a lot of action with a very small movement from your wrist. (thank you long rod!) I felt so cool that I cut down another rod that always bugged me as well. I "finished" the Berkley by gorilla gluing a quarter on the end of the handle. (The quarter was from Kansas, to spite my fishing partner who said I was crazy...he is from Kansas) I happened to find that on the other rod, an Ugly Stik Lite 7' rod that I had been using for cranking, that a beer bottle cap fit it perfectly. Seemed appropriate. Pic's to follow...should I move this thread to the rod building section?

Lets cut to the chase, what kind of beer bottle cap???

It is a cap from a Polish beer, called Black Boss Porter....real smooth and packs a wallop at 9.4% abv....comes in a European bottle of 16.9 oz....I highly recommend them for all occasions, especially ones involving creative restructuring of perfectly fine equipment. Cheers!

The reason behind the 8' rod length rule is a matter of safety. I asked B.A.S.S. the reasoning behind it and that was their answer. They say that having rods over 8' in length could pose a safety issue between angler and co-angler. So I started to think about that, and I could agree. If you have a 17' boat and two guys using a 8'6" rods, there poses a danger of smacking rods together and possible hooking another angler. I have a 19' boat and I know I have almost been hooked by a co-angler not paying attention to what they are doing.
