I'm going to attend the kokanee class at Suttle Lake in April. Guess what? I don't have any kokanee-specific gear!
I have some cash to spend and I can also make my own 1/2 oz banana jigs.
The big question: what should I buy, and where do I find it? Brands, sizes, colors, you name it. I live just north of Eugene.
I do not have a downrigger on my boat yet, but that is in the budget. I enjoy jigging and bait fishing as well. I just want to catch lots of big kokanee.
Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to creating a few new tackle boxes.

I attended last years kokanee class. You don't need gear for the class, so you must be referring to the "field trip" at Suttle. The only thing we used was Gibbs minnows on a cast/jig retrieve. Mostly pink/white and related colors. Trolling doesn't happen there till later when the big shallow schools break up and start moving, according to Moknots.
Every one of these guys was on a Gibbs.

If the snow doesn't melt soon, a shovel. :wink:The ramp should be clear by then. UPDATE Checked the snow depth today, Friday,at the ramp. There is only about 18 inches but it is wet heavy pack snow. It should be gone by koke day.

My dad and I are scheduled for the Friday evening class. We're booked at the lodge for the weekend so we can apply our new knowledge! I'm bringing my North River Revenge.

I have seen gibbs in nearly every sporting goods retailer in central oregon, but I am not sure about how that may translate to the mid-willamette valley. The first stop I would make would be at Bi-Mart.
I still get excited every time I see that "Board Meeting" Picture, thanks Joe.

Ok, I've got a question. I have a few really old floresant orange spoons that I used in Montana years ago. Have anybody tried spoons here on them? These spoons are about 35yrs old and have been unemployed long enough. They did work great in Montana.

Orange is a very good color at some lakes here as well...

The lodge will have some gibbs on hand and Aufish101 has generously donated one of his most excellent jigs for everyone in the class!! FOB is correct, most likely trolling won't be the go-to method that early. You will have plenty of inpiration about what to buy after the class for the rest of the season, but bring any light spinning rods you have and I can help you pick the most appropriate for kokanee. Spool up with small diameter braid in hi-vis if you have it, and bring some good quality 6 or 8 pound leader material and some small duo-lock snaps. Throw in some 1/4 and 3/16 oz slip sinkers, some swivels, and some #4 Gami dropshot or octopus hooks and you'll be covered for bait fishing if they aren't on the jigs. K.I.S. for now -- once you get hooked, be prepared to get a bigger tackle box:)

3 or 4 years ago when I got serious about catching Kokes I got some jigs from Aufish101, a member of I Fish. Not sure if he is still making jigs, or not, but he made some nice ones at good prices.
Aufish, are you still making them?:excited:

Pharmseller...looks like I am in the same boat as you....I need to stock up for this thing. I am glad I read this thread though, I was ramping up for a trolling show!....

If you have trolling gear, bring it, you never know.... As for bait, white corn, red eggs, maggots, worms, periwinkles and crawdad tails are the classics.

I would say to buy some buzz bombs in pink/white, orange, and pink. A lot of leader in the small size range of 2-3lb, bullet weights, worms, white shoepeg corn, and small shrimp, shrimp flavored smelly jelly is a must as well. We have usually fished with 3 foot leaders, a sliding wieght, and worm, corn, egg and smelly jelly. Pretty effective on that lake. You don't need a ton of gear to catch fish, but a good light rod helps!

Lutton's hardware in Sisters should be restocked with jigs by then if anyone comes and needs some tackle. They are placing their order for restocking around the first of April. If you jig deep, 80' or more, be sure to pick up a 1/2 oz. blue/pink Point Wilson Dart.

The Lodge at Suttle Lake has agreed to stock up on some essentials, and will have some great stuff on hand at the class. Hootchies from RMT, Seps dodgers, Wedding Ring spinners, Gibbs minnows, and more. Perhaps Aufish 101 will bring along a nice stock of his excellent jigs (AND he's donated one for everyone in the class!!).

Nobody saying much about rods. I'm bringing three.
1) Shakespere Intrepid 6'6" light action for four pound line w/Pflueger Trion reel.
2) Eagle Claw "Feather Light" 6'6" for two pound line but don't have any so usine four pound, w/Shimano PK2000FA reel.
3) My favorite, an Okuma Celilo Kokanee Pro, 7' for two pound line also but spooled with four pound on an Ambassadeur 2500 CL reel.
Should I bring along a heavier rod too for maybe a Laker? Got an 8'6" Grigg w/Ambassaduer 5000. Have 15# Stren on it but have spool of 15# Rip Cord braided.
I just recently got the Eagle Claw rod from Cabelas. Think it was about $18. Got a new "Bass Pro Shops" catalog today and they have a "Bass Pro shops Micro-Light glass rod that looks like it would be about like the Eagle Claw. Either 6'6" or 7'6" two piece rod for $19.99. From what I've been hearing these light rods are just the thing. Of course a 15" fish on one of them with 2# line would probably be a hoot!
I'm only gonna be there Sat only, got animals at home and no baby sitter! But have room for one person in an old ugly boat if anyone needs a spot. Doesn't hardly leak at all!:D

As far as I know you aren't going to run into a laker in Suttle. Some nice rainbows and browns come out of the lake. As far as the line sizes, I like the way you fish! Light is fun although I would not go with anything less than 4 and 6 is probably a safer bet but...its all in the leader when still fishing 3 foot leaders in the 2-3lb have proven themselves many times!
