I have fished newberg for years but never really targeted spring smallmouth like lots of guys. When do you guys start fishing for them?

People are already out fishing them. If I get my boat finished I will be out there chasing them myself this weekend. This is still early in the year on the river. The key to fishing this ealy is to expect one to two bites at the most. If you get more then that then it was a great day. The early spring is about the size of the fish not the number of fish. If you want numbers then wait till mid to late April. If you want size start now.

Are you talking about the area around Ash Island? Other areas near Newberg?

I have caught them behind ash island in January before. Some of the biggest fish i have goten have bin this time of year around ther.

I've never had any good luck in Hagg Lake for bass or trout :noway:
