Here is my second smallie of the year, caught February 22nd on the Willy out of Wilsonville on a crankbait off of a rock reef. Caught this one about an hour after my first fish of the year..... the first fish was not picture-worthy.

February 21st on the Willamette. Got 3 that day in about 3 hours of actual fishing time. The smallest at around 2lbs, then around 2.5, then right at 3lbs (on scale), in that order. The last two came almost back to back. It was a good day of fishing in February for me! Especially considering that I have never caught smallmouth bass in February.

I blanked on the Willy Saturday morning so I hit a private pond with cimfl.

Landed only one fish but it was a personal best LMB in Oregon.

6lbs 8oz on the digital scale.

Thanks guys.

I have to be honest. Even though this was my first of the year and it was my PB in Oregon, the most exciting part of catching this fish was watching it hit. It follow the lure into 2 feet of water and was less then 10 feet from shore when it hit. I got to watch the whole thing and had to work hard not to set the hook too soon.

As for the fight, well I had to make sure to play the fish out because I had to land it by hand in shallow water and it still took less the 45 seconds from hookset till I was lipping it. Now I remember why I fish smallies.

If you don't mind, what kind of plastics did you catch them on? Tubes, senkos, worm, etc. was it dropshotting?

Thanks.

romanfishing: I don't know the name of the pond but if you want more info send me a PM.

Whopper Stopper: Location, location, location. Boy I wish I had a lake like that to fish during lunch.

KStock: Nice job on the Willy smallies. Looks like you and tuanchau beat me to the smallies. I have only made one trip out to the Willy so far and I came up empty. I just got back into town yesterday and can't wait to hit the Willy. I really need a smallie fix.

Well, couldn't resist the weather that this last weekend presented.
So, pulled the duck blind off the boat, topped off the batteries and hit the Upper Willy for an afternoon w/ my Uncle.

1st hookup of the year was a total botch job on my part.
Hooked up on one of the largest smallies in years and LOST IT! :passout:
I guess I'm rusty. A case of too big of fish, to small of a hook and not enough drag to pierce the big girl's lip. Got it to within ft of the boat and she broke water and come unbuckled. UHHHG! Man what a mouth on her too. 18-20" fish but I'll never know for sure now. Man I'm so disappointed in myself.
Best smallie in a long time and I screwed it up.:bricks:

Managed a couple other fish and a handful of bites, all on a baby brush hog carolina rigged.
Tried the lipless in the shallow backwaters and nada.
But had a good time and was pleased.

I wish I could come down with a nasty cold, but I think I started out to healthy this morning. I don't think my boss would buy it. Good luck, today and look forward to hearing how you did. On another note, Rich my brother and law will be on the lower willy tomorrow, wish I could be there for that, but I will post up his results. We are going to take the pontoons out to a nice pond on Thursday. Of course the weather won' be as nice as today but will manage.

Don't feel bad, Mike, it happens to all of us (me a lot more than you I bet... ha ha). I think, in time, losing a fish like that will make you a better fisherman had you caught it! Glad to see you are all fired up to get back on the horse!

Well, had an even better day. But it got off to a rough start.
Forgot the boat keys and wireless remote for the bowmount....didn't realize it until I got to the launch. Uhhg!!! :passout:
No way to even get inside the bow compartment to get the pedal out. UHHHHHG!
No way to start big motor. UHHHHHG!!! :bricks:
Fortunately the 8hp Honda kicker is a pull start and doesn't need a key.
So I back bounced, backtrolled, slow drifted and anchored. Interesting bass fishing w/ a kicker.
Fortunately I had my walleye experience to fall back on.

Then.....Broke a hook on the first fish right off the bat. Uhhhhhg!
But it turned out all good in the end w/ 3 fish boated and a handful of missed bites.

Thinking of a three-peat again this afternoon.

This is the 2nd Gami I've broke on a fish. Stepped up to a 2/0 after that.

Well, went back out for a 3-peat w/ Chase "2Thirdteen" and blanked on bass.
Did manage one fin clipped silver fish on a Norman Middle N Craw. Real monster too. he, he, he.

On the water by 1:30 and had a few bites that we just couldn't hook up on.
Then as the clouds overcast and sun dissapeared, it died. South wind rolled in and it got pretty tough to fish.
Oh well, fun while it lasted.

Chase, pleasure fishing w/ you. Sorry we couldn't get you a fish.
Next time,
