Swamp Critter

I'm staying at Eagle Crest Resort for a few days starting next weekend. I'd rather fish than golf or ski  I've flyfished the river many times but not this stretch (I heard they have ~ 2 miles or so of river front).
Has anyone fished there? Would I be better off jumping in my truck and going up or down stream. Rumor has it this area has lower fish numbers and tough to fish
Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!

If you must try, head downstream where there are some deeper holes.
My advice - Crooked River. A short drive, and even I can catch fish up there.

Swamp, there is good river access if you park by the recreation center and resturant. The trail here takes you right down to the river where you can either hike up or down river. Bring your waders as the river this time of the is up in the willows. Also bring your March Brown patterns. Another fly I have used here is a size 16 H & L. There are mostly browns here so you cast some small streamers next willows or rock ledges.

Don't forget the small black stone hatch!

Thanks for the suggestions. I hope the weather isn't too cold to push the fish down...it was in the teens last night.
I'll try to post a report when I get back.

I tried a couple of times and the rumor about less fish is absolutely correct. I would also agree with the Crooked. Will take you 30-40 minutes tops and one of the best trout streams in the state (in my opinion) and this time of the year is perfect with little pressure. Don't worry about the water color, won't be pretty, really.

Fly only guy, if there is little pressure on the Crooked this time of year, I would really hate to see it when it actually gets crowded. I fished it today and there was more people up there than I have ever seen. Literally, there was anywhere from 5 to 20 guys in nearly every stretch of river you came to. I found a quiet(er) stretch and did land nearly 30 fish in about two hours. The usual orange scud was killing them until a BWO hatch came off around noon, then a Griffith's Gnat, the closest thing I had with me, did the trick for the next hour.
The moral here, don't believe everything you read, especially about the Crooked not being very heavily pressured this time of year. Until general season (ie the lower Deschutes) opens, expect to see continued heavy pressure there.
