Well, this weeks entry is a bit off of the typical path. Please know that this challenge of "Carp on the Fly" will totally alleviate any problems you may ever have with "Zipperlip" Tension/ frustration. You WILL have the entire state to yourself!
After fishing the surf W/ dog & wife, my carping was relegated to only a few casts this week...
The REPORT: The temp HAS come up! The midges are out and about. The rain has brought in a few other goodies too! The bulk of carp action this week has been "rooters"(my personal favorite). Best to site cast to & they're actively eating. Bad news, they're typically in groups. which means one bad cast and Bye bye...They're ALL gone. (at least for a short while.)

On our lake here, mornings too are the best for flyfishing. Just this morning as I was having breakfast there were carp in close to the shore line. Just lazily tailing and looking for breakfast of their own. What I want to know is: Whenever I have to hurry and be off to work that's when THEY KNOW it's safe to come close to shore and feed and show themselves!!! Aggggh! It's maddening. Mornings when I have time & my wife has left w/ the baby I think "Okay carp, get ready cause here I come..." Only to see a nice chop on the water. Too windy. No sight of fish. zilch. But, the minute my wife comes home and I have a new chore to do...D'oh. There are the carp. I swear, they have video surveilance in my house. They just seem to know when I'm too busy.......

That's it for the week. I'll see you Saturday!

ZZZZZZZZIPPER LIP!!! graemlins/eek13.gif

Just kidding. Yes, shhhhhh dont tell anyone. Blue is a favorite for me. The Hex hatch is awesome! Nobody to harrass you either! You can rent boats from (METRO) I can't remember the price. I have my DB there, as I am a member of "Interachen" You can however use float tubes when in season. But, I don't care much for carpin' from a float tube. Because it's hard to stalk & spot fish from such a low profile. I like standing and shooting mega casts to reach for 'em. Where are you fishing Saturday? I am headed to a big Central Oregon River (? hmmmm) Tomorrow for some "hopefully" drizzly weather to bring a BWO hatch. If no rain is predicted I'll go down I-5 to the (area of Springfield OR) for the March Browns!!! I'll be watching Matt Zaffino tonight for sure!!! Where to go.... Oh Where to go!?!

Saturday will be either the deschutes or the Metolius. I have not heard that the Mac is on yet and the level may be to high. I guess if I heard the MB were on I would go there.

Back to carp, what time of year is best? How much do you dry fly and who much sub surface.

WDFW recommended the general public need to learn carp fishing techiniques as most of the bio mass in Vancouver Lake is Carp. Don't know what flies they like.
I know they cant resisit a doughball.

My brother does a bit of flyfishing for carp, I'd like to give it a try someday. There's so many of them big rascals out there and nobody hardly fishes for them....Don't recall ever seeing the boat ramp pluged up because the carp are in.

If you seed an area with real dough balls or kernel corn to attract them , you can use a white or yellow egg pattern with some scent on in. Cast into the seeded area and wait for a take. If you're site fishing, a Clouser crayfish pattern is your best bet. Cast a few feet ahead of them (like you would bonefish) and give it a strip.....wait for the take. Some times you will see pods (usually smaller fish) feeding near the surface. Try casting a nympg or larve pattern just ahead of where they're moving.
Caution: Don't use a 3wt.
