I'll be in SunRiver for 4 days this week on business and have some free time, presumably to ski with my group. Well, the snow is no good and I'd rather fish anyway. I've swung flys along the Deschutes in the area of the SunRiver restuaraunt and at Fall Creek as well but that was in the summer. Any chance of finding some trout this time of year and if so, on what. I presume hatches are light if at all and I should stick to nymphs (not my strong suit [like I have one anyway]). Suggestions greatly appreciated. I'll need to stick pretty close to the SunRiver area.

Fall River is about it!

The Deschutes below Benham Falls is open also, I've fished that all of ONCE - without success.

Crooked River sounds the most promising, but that's not right in the neighborhood!

Fall River is a lovely bit of crystal clear water. You'll get to SEE fish, at least. And they'll see you!

I would for sure hit the Fall River and go all the way to the guard shack which is about a mile past the Fall River campground. You can watch the fish and see what they are doing. There is a hatch like someone else said around 11 to 2 everyday with occasional caddis. The shop in the industrial park in sunriver is really good. The owners name is Bob and is really helpful and will let you know what you need. The guard shack by the way is the forest service cabin at the headwaters. You can walk the bank and spot fish. There will be runs with absolutely nothing in it and some runs with quite a few. The guard shack always has fish in the winter that wouldn't have got affected by the spill.

I fished Fall River by the hatchery two weeks ago and it was slow (the BWO hatch never got going). That river would be the closest from SunRiver. If you get out and want to fish Fall River with drys, use small (18 or 20) BWO patterns with 7x leader. A small black size 16 elk hair can fool a few because they kinda match the winter stone that should be out about now. The hatch is usually between 11 and 2.

Fall river has recently suffered a chemical spill. Over the fire season thousands of gallons of fire retardant spilled into the stream. The prediction was 22,000 dead trout. It was a great river. They are starting to stock it I hear, but it won't be that great yet.
I say the Crooked is your best bet. Plenty of fish. It has more trout in it than any other river in Oregon, in reguards to amount of water. Check West-Fly for hatches.
