View Full Version : 4wt reel
My 12 year old son is wanting to fly fish so I gave him one of my rods. The only 4wt reel I have is a cheep piece of junk. Does anyone have a mid quality 4wt reel for a fair price? I haven't been working for over 7 months so I can't spend much.
Thanks

I like the Ross Reels. The Scientific Angler reels are nice too.

Orvis has a cassette style reel ( can't recall the name) "rocky mountain" maybe??? anyway they are an excellent reel for around 70-80 dollars
I'm thinking more like used and around $40.00.
I have about $10.00 a month that I can spend until I get back to work.

I have had an SA 456 for almost ten years, click pawl. At the time I think I bought it for $45. It is virtually indestructable and makes a lotta racket when a fish takes off, lotsa fun!!!
Lamiglas has a good looking little click pawl for around $50, it looks to be very similar to the SA but I have never used one.
A buddy of mine bought an Okuma for his steelhead set up, disc drag, so far it has been a great reel for a ridiculous price. I think they also make smaller click pawls as well.
That's my $.02, good luck!

Bi-mart has Okuma Sierras for around $30 and they're really great. Light and smooth. Not sure if they sell 4 wt size, however. I think I have seen 5/6 and 7/8 models.

Why not pick up a glass rod for your son. I think River City has some for around 20-30$. they can be a great sub for graphite. And a great starter rod. You might also pick up an older bamboo at a garage sale! I think I picked up a nice little H&I reel for 15$ at an antique shop. Ball bearings and graphite are not necessary for a biginner. Good Luck

The Pflueger Medalist is a great reel for around $30-40 new.
It's nothing fancy, but it does the job.
I use one on my 5 weight.
deefly,
My bamboo rods never leave the case. I gave him a Lamiglass Graphite rod I never use. It has a reel on it but I'd rather give him a better reel.

Remember even if Bi-Mart does not stock it, often they can order other models if they carry that brand.

FRG,
Special orders at BiMart are often lower priced than if it was an on shelf item

If you ever want a nice midrange 4 wt reel I have a Tioga that is very fine. Picked it up at the sportsman show last year for under $100.
